Dr. Sandra Ettema
has joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield as an assistant professor in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.
Ettema specializes in laryngology which focuses on treating disorders of the larynx and voice. She also treats pediatric patients with head and neck issues and adults with head and neck cancer. Her general otolaryngology practice focuses on treating conditions, including disorders of the thyroid, sleep apnea and sleep disorders, sinusitis, and speech and swallowing disorders.
Prior to joining SIU, Ettema completed a fellowship in laryngology at SIU (2008). She completed her residency in otolaryngology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (2007). Ettema earned her medical degree through the Medical Scholars Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) as well as a doctorate and master’s in speech and hearing science (2002, 1999, 1993). She graduated with honors with a bachelor’s in speech and hearing science from the University of Illinois (1991).
Before completing her medical training, Ettema was an instructor and research assistant in the Department of Speech and Hearing Science at UIUC. She also has extensive experience as a speech-language pathologist.
Ettema is a member of several professional societies including the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association and American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Her research interests include disorders of the voice and swallowing, disorders of sleep and cleft palate speech and swallowing.
