Karen Held Hales, Ph.D., Karen Hales Portrait has joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Carbondale as an assistant professor of physiology.

Hales comes to SIU from Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, where she was a faculty member (2007-09).  She previously was on the faculty in the physiology/biophysics department at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) (1989-2001).

She completed fellowships in biochemistry at the UIC (1995) and in microbiology and immunology at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (1989).  She earned her doctoral degree at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver (1985) and her bachelor’s at Colorado State University in Fort Collins (1979).

She has had more than 20 journal articles published about her research interest in reproductive endocrinology and RNA biology.

A native of Denver, Hales is married to Dale “Buck” Hales, Ph.D., professor and chair of the physiology department at SIU.  They have one child.
