Dr. Joseph Q. Henkle Dr. Joseph Henkle portrait joined faculty the in internal medicine at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 1986. He is currently associate professor and chief of pulmonary medicine and as director of the SIU/Memorial Medical Center Sleep Disorders Center. [Note: He has since been promoted to professor.]

Henkle completed a  fellowship in pulmonary medicine at Good Samaritan and the Veterans Administration Medical Centers in Phoenix, Ariz. (1986) and his residency in internal medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City (1984).  He earned both his medical and bachelor’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin in Madison (1981, 1976).

Henkle is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, critical care medicine and sleep medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine.  He is a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians.

His research interests are pulmonary and critical care medicine and sleep disorders medicine. He has served as principal investigator on six research projects and has authored more than 20 professional articles.
