Martha Hlafka, M.D., has joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as an assistant professor and hospitalist in the internal medicine department. She will provide medical care at SIU-affiliated hospitals in Springfield.
Hlafka completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City (2012), and subsequently served as a chief resident of internal medicine at UIHC for 2012-2013. She earned her medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (2009) and her bachelor’s degree in chemistry and biology at Illinois State University (1992).
Hlafka is board certified in internal medicine and is a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.
Prior to receiving her medical degree, Hlafka was a validation engineer/contractor for ProPharma Group, Inc. in Overland Park, Kan., developing analytical protocols and procedures for quality control labs in two pharmaceutical manufacturing plants (2005-06). She was also a genome sequence finisher at the Genome Sequencing Center at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis (2004-05), and worked for more than a decade as a chemist, supervisor and production superintendent in the Pharmaceuticals division of Tyco Healthcare/Mallinckrodt in St. Louis, Mo. (1993-04).
Hlafka resides in Springfield.
