Ronald W. Kanwischer
joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 1987. He is an assistant professor of psychiatry. As part of his SIU responsibilities, he has consulted with and designed clinical programs for the Illinois Department of Mental Health and Disabilities for persons with mental health and substance use disorders (1990-92). He also designed and ran a therapy and evaluation service for persons with substance use disorders at Memorial Medical Center (1992-2002).
In addition to his clinical practice, he currently assists with coordination of the outpatient services at the Department of Psychiatry.
Kanwischer earned his master’s and bachelor’s degrees at the University of Illinois at Springfield (1987, 1978).
He is certified as an alcohol and other drug abuse counselor and board registered to treat persons with mental illness and substance abuse. He is a member of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. His clinical interests are substance abuse disorder assessment and evaluation, co-occurring substance abuse and mental illness, and general psychotherapy.
