SIU Med School, SIU HealthCare Name New Chief

Dr. Hyung T. Kim has been named associate dean for clinical affairs for Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and chief executive officer (CEO) of SIU HealthCare.  Kim is responsible for providing leadership and support for clinically related activities of the medical school as well as oversight and strategic direction for SIU HealthCare, the medical school’s group practice.  He also will hold a faculty appointment as assistant professor of internal medicine and medical humanities.

"After an extensive national search, we have recruited a strong physician leader to guide our growing group practice, SIU HealthCare, and address the challenges of health care reform and the ever changing economic landscape,” said Dr. J. Kevin Dorsey, SIU dean and provost. "With extensive experience in physician, hospital and business integration, Dr. Kim will advance the development of our clinical expertise and our service to the people of Illinois."

Most recently, Kim was vice president of research and a managing partner for Transformational Development for Ascension Health based in St. Louis, the largest Catholic health system in the U.S. (2005-10).  He has held other positions including vice president for clinical practice leadership for Thomson Medstat, a health care information services company in Ann Arbor (2004-05) and several positions for McKinsey & Company, a management consulting firm in Detroit (1999-2004).  He was on the faculty of the University of Michigan (UM) Medical School in Ann Arbor (1995-98).

Kim completed his internal medicine residency and MBA degree at UM (1995, 2000).  He earned his medical and bachelor’s degrees at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (1992, 1988.

A native of St. Louis, Kim and his wife, Joyce, have three children.
