He joins SIU after serving as an associate professor of surgery and pediatrics at the University of Connecticut (1996-2001), and director of urodynamics at Connecticut Childrens' Medical Center (1995-2001). Previously, he was head of the pediatric urology division at Portsmouth Naval Hospital and assistant clinical professor at Eastern Virginia Medical School (1991-95).
McKenna received his bachelor's and medical degrees from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. (1978, 1982). He completed his urology residency at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, Va. (1987) and headed the urology department at the U.S. Naval Hospital Guam (1987-89). He then completed a two-year clinical and research fellowship in pediatric urology at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto (1991).
McKenna is a diplomat of the American Board of Urology, a specialty fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the Society of Pediatric Urology. He also is a member of the American Urological Association, the Society of University Urologists, the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Pediatric Urology, the Society of Government Service Urologists and the Society for Transplantation. He is president-elect of the International Society for Fetal Urology (ISFU) and has also served on committees and in various offices for ISFU, the National Kidney Foundation and the Society of Pediatric Urology. He has authored more than 40 journal articles.
A native of Lake Placid, N.Y., McKenna and his wife, Linda, have three daughters.
