Dr. Andreas H. Meier Dr. Andreas Meier portrait has joined the faculty at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as associate professor and chair of the pediatric surgery division.  He is one of the new pediatric specialists recruited for St. John’s Children’s Hospital, a joint endeavor of SIU and St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.  He is also director of the SIU Surgical Skills Lab and Simulation Center and has special interest in surgical education.  His surgical specialty is laparoscopic pediatric surgery.

Prior to joining SIU, Meier was assistant professor of surgery and pediatrics and director of education in the pediatric surgery division at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, Penn.  He also served as the surgical director of its simulation center.

Meier’s medical training included a two-year pediatric surgery fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. (2002).  He also completed two research fellowships in advanced technology in surgery and surgical oncology at Stanford University (2000, 1994).  He finished his general surgery residency at Stanford University (1999).  He obtained his medical degree from Ludwig Maximilian University School of Medicine in Munich, Germany (1990).  He is beginning a master’s in health profession education program at the University of Illinois.

Meier is board certified in general and pediatric surgery.  He is a member of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, Association for Academic Surgery, American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Surgeons and Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons.  Meier’s research interests include applications for minimally invasive surgery in pediatric patients as well as novel approaches to surgical education.
