Dr. John D. Mellinger has joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as a professor, division chair and residency program director of general surgery.
Previously Mellinger was on the faculty at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta, where he was residency program director, chief of gastrointestinal surgery and director of the Surgical Skills Laboratory (2002-10), and at Michigan State University (MSU) in Grand Rapids, where he served as assistant dean (2001-02).
He served a fellowship in surgical endoscopy at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland (1990). He completed his general surgery residency at Blodgett Memorial Medical Center/St. Mary’s Hospital/MSU (1989). He earned his medical degree graduating with honors from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland (1984). Mellinger served four years in the U.S. Air Force.
Mellinger is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is a member of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Association for Surgical Education and Association of Program Directors in Surgery. He is board certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery.
His clinical practice interests include gastrointestinal endoscopy, including ERCP, gastrointestinal surgery and laparoscopic surgery. He has coauthored more than 65 research publications and book chapters.
Having grown up in Ohio, Mellinger is married to Elaine Mellinger and has four children.
