Dr. Brian Moore biography

Brian E. Moore, MD, has joined Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as an associate professor in the Department of Neurology. He is cross-appointed in the departments of Pathology and Medical Education as well as the Division of Neurosurgery. In addition to his teaching duties, he will serve as director of the brain bank at the Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders at SIU.

Moore worked at Pathology Associates of Central Illinois at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield (2006-13) and has taught the neuromuscular and behavior unit of Second Year curriculum for SIU School of Medicine since 2006. In 2011 he received the Golden Apple Award for outstanding teaching from the School of Medicine’s graduating class. Moore completed a fellowship in neuropathology at Rhode Island Hospital (2006) and a research fellowship at Roger Williams Medical Center at Brown University Medical School, Providence, R.I. (2003). Moore completed residencies in anatomic pathology at Brown (2005) and the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) in Worcester (2002). He earned his medical degree at UMMS in 1999, a master’s degree in education at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass. (1990) and a bachelor’s degree cum laude in drama/film studies at Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H. (1986).

Moore is certified in anatomic pathology and neuropathology by the American Board of Pathology. He is on the Board of Directors and Treasurer for the Sangamon County Medical Society, a fellow of the College of American Pathology and a member of the American Association of Neuropathologists.

Moore has written or coauthored more than 18 book chapters and articles on his research interests, which include neurologic disease and stem cell transdifferentiation. He is also author of the “Neuropathology Blog,” a widely read neuropathology website on the internet.

Moore lives in Springfield with his wife, plastic surgeon Jennifer Lee, MD, and children, Ava and Liam.
