Dr. John E. Murphy has been named chair of the department of pathology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He succeeds Dr. John Dietrich, professor of pathology, who remains on the faculty.
A professor of pathology, Murphy has been on the SIU volunteer faculty since 1977. He continues as medical director of the chemistry and toxicology laboratories at Memorial Medical Center (1978 - present). He also is active in MMC's cytopathology laboratory. He is on the consulting staff at St. John's Hospital and Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.
Murphy completed his internship at LA County/University of Southern California Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif. (1971) and completed his residency in pathology and a one-year fellowship in clinical chemistry/radiochemistry at Upstate University of New York Hospital in Syracuse, N.Y. (1976, 1977). He served in the U. S. Army at William Beaumont Hospital in El Paso, Texas (1971-73) and at Dewitt Army Hospital in Fort Belvoir, Va. (1973-75). He earned his medical degree from the University of Illinois (UI) Medical School in Chicago (1970) and bachelor's degree from the UI in Champaign (1968).
Murphy is board certified in clinical and anatomic pathology, clinical chemistry, and radioisotopic chemistry by the American Board of Pathology. He also is a fellow of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and the College of American Pathologists.
