Dr. Erica E. Nelson has joined the faculty of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield as an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology. [Note: She has since been promoted to associate professor. She also has been named director for the general obstetrics and gynecology division.]
She comes to the School from the Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, where she was an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology. She also was a consulting physician in the obstetrics and gynecology department at the Portland Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Nelson completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology (1995) and an internship in general surgery (1991) at the Oregon Health Sciences University affiliated hospitals in Portland. She earned her medical degree at the University of Vermont in Burlington (1990). She earned her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at Pomona College in Claremont, Cal. (1985), and completed a research fellowship in dermatology at the University of Southern California (1986).
She is board certified by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners. She is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics.
She and her husband, Dr. Robert McLafferty, assistant professor of surgery at SIU, have two children: Bryant and Lesley.
