Dr. Hilary A. Sanfey has joined the faculty at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as professor of surgery and vice chair of educational affairs in surgery. She specializes in kidney/pancreas transplantation. Her research interests include resident learning styles, the impact of resident teachers on medical student learning, and leadership development.
Prior to joining SIU, Sanfey was professor of surgery with the University of Virginia Health System. She was associate program director in surgery and the surgery clerkship
Sanfey is currently enrolled in a master’s in health professions education program at the University of Chicago, expecting to complete it this year. Her medical training included a fellowship in solid organ transplantation at the University of Virginia (1997). Sanfey completed her surgical training at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and Guys Hospital in London (1980). She received both her undergraduate and medical training from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland (1974, 1976).
Sanfey is a member of several medical societies including Alpha Omega Alpha, the Association of Women Surgeons, American Association of Transplant Surgeons and Association for Surgical Education. She is a member of the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons.
