Dr. Anwar Shafi has joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as an assistant professor of pediatrics, specializing in pediatric pulmonology. He is one of the new pediatric specialists recruited as part of St. John’s Children’s Hospital, a joint endeavor of SIU and St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.
Previously, he was on the faculty at Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation in Karachi, Pakistan (2005-07), head of pediatrics at Dawadmi General Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia (2003-04) and in private practice in Karachi, Pakistan (1991-95).
Shafi completed a three-year fellowship in pediatric pulmonary medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, N.Y. (2002). He completed his pediatric residency at the Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Centre in Bronx, N.Y. (1999) and earned his medical degree at Sindh Medical College/University of Karachi in Pakistan (1989).
He is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Pediatric Pulmonology and is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society.
Shafi has made presentations and published journal articles on his research interest of asthma and other diseases of the lung.
A native of Pakistan, Shafi is married to Naheed Anwar and has two sons, Hamza and Hassaan.
