Ross D. Silverman, J.D., Ross D. Silverman, J.D., portrait associate professor of medical humanities and psychiatry, has been named chair of the medical humanities department at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. [NOTE: He has since been promoted to professor.]

Silverman is also an associate professor of medical jurisprudence at SIU School of Law and co-directs the medical and law schools’ joint M.D./J.D. degree program.  He joined SIU’s faculty in 1998.  He previously served as special counsel to the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine (1996-98).

Silverman succeeds Dr. Sharon Hull, who has been named chair of community health sciences at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy.

Silverman’s other administrative responsibilities include chairing the medical school’s admissions committee and serving on its Educational Policy Council.  He is a member of the doctoring curriculum committee and directs the medical humanities clerkship for third-year medical students.  He also is faculty advisor for the SIU’s Association for Medicine and Policy.

Silverman earned his law degree and his master’s in public health at Boston University (1995, 1996) and his bachelor’s at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. (1992).

Silverman has published nationally in the areas of health law, patient safety, and public health law, policy and ethics.  He is deputy editor of the Journal of Legal Medicine and co-author/editor of the recently-released two-volume text, The Law of Medical Practice of Illinois, third edition.  He also is the primary investigator on the Code of Medical Ethics current opinions with annotations project for the American Medical Association.

His memberships include the American and Illinois State Bar Associations, American College of Legal Medicine, American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics and Public Health Law Association.  A member of the American Public Health Association, he serves as chair of its health law special primary interest group.

A native of River Vale, N.J., Silverman is married to Tami Silverman and has a daughter, Miranda, and a son, Maxwell.
