Dr. Elizabeth Ramsey Unal has joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Medicine as an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology. She will provide maternal-fetal care in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Springfield.

Unal ┬árecently completed a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where she has been an instructor in obstetrics and gynecology since 2009. She also earned a master’s degree in clinical research during her fellowship at MUSC (2011). She was previously an assistant professor of OB-GYN at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield (2007-09). She served her medical residency at MUSC in 2003-07, acting as chief resident during her 4th year. She earned her medical degree at SIU School of Medicine (2003) and a bachelor’s degree at Grinnell College, in Grinnell, Iowa (1997).

Unal is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She has authored articles on her research interests, including hepatitis B in pregnancy and the role of inflammation in labor. Dr. Unal and her husband, Dr. Sheref Unal, also an SIU physician, live in Springfield with their four children.
