Dr. Omar A. Vargas has joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as an assistant professor of general internal medicine. [Note: He has since been promoted to associate professor.] He also is a member of SIU HealthCare, the medical school’s practice group.
Vargas comes to SIU from the medical staff at the University of Illinois (UI) College of Medicine and Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn (2008-10) where he served as the Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program.
He began his internal medicine training at SIU (2004-06) and he completed his internal medicine residency, including a year as chief resident, at UI (2008). He earned his medical degree at National University of Colombia (2000).
Vargas is board certified in internal medicine. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine and the US-Colombian Medical Association. He received two awards while a resident at SIU – the Barry Breen Award for the outstanding resident and the Apple Award for excellence in teaching.
He is married to Dr. Laura B. Vargas, assistant professor of neonatology at SIU. They have two sons, Julian and Benjamin.
