BIOGRAPHICAL DETAILS -- SIU Fertility and IVF Center, SIU School of Medicine
SIU’s fertility experts include physicians, nurses, and embryology and andrology staff led by nationally-recognized professionals with decades of extensive experience in assisted reproductive technologies. 

Medical Staff
Dr. Gary M. Horowitz is medical director of the SIU Fertility and IVF Center as well as professor of obstetrics and gynecology and chief of the department’s reproductive endocrinology and infertility division.  Most recently, he was director of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Boonshaft School of Medicine at Wright State University.  He completed a two-year fellowship in reproductive endocrinology at Mt. Sinai Medical Center (1993) and his obstetrics and gynecology residency at Wilford Hall U. S. Air Force Medical Center (1989).  He earned his medical degree at the University of North Carolina (1985) and his bachelor’s at the U. S. Air Force Academy (1974).  Horowitz is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.  He joined SIU in 2007.

Dr. J. Ricardo Loret de Mola is practice director of the SIU Fertility and IVF Center as well as department chair and associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology.  Previously he served as chief of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at Case Western Reserve University, where he also was the medical/practice director of the MacDonald Fertility and IVF Center.  Loret de Mola completed a two-year research fellowship at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) (1998).  He completed a two-year fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Pennsylvania (1996) and his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at CWRU (1994).  He earned medical and bachelor’s degrees at the Monterrey Institute of Technology (1988, 1983).  Loret de Mola is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology and in reproductive endocrinology and infertility.  He joined the SIU faculty in 2007.

Dr. Tobias Köhler is an assistant professor of surgery and chief of the male infertility/urology division in the surgery department.  He completed a fellowship in andrology at Northwestern University (2008).  He completed his urology residency training and earned a master’s in public health at the University of Minnesota as well as both his medical and bachelor’s degrees (2003, 2001, 1997, 1993).  Köhler is board eligible in urology with an emphasis in andrology and male infertility.  He joined the SIU faculty in 2008.

Laboratory Staff
Mary Ellen McAsey, Ph.D., is an associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology and director of research for the department as well as laboratory director for the SIU Fertility and IVF Center.  She is certified as a high complexity clinical laboratory director and an embryology laboratory director by the American Board of Bioanalysis.  She completed her doctoral degree at the University of Arizona where she also was a postdoctoral research associate (1995, 1996).  She earned her master’s and bachelor’s degrees at the University of Wisconsin (1978, 1975).  She joined SIU’s faculty in 1996.

James Kontio is the embryology laboratory supervisor and senior embryologist.  Previously, he was IVF laboratory director for Fertility Unlimited Ohio and served as IVF manager and technical director of the in vitro fertilization service at Akron City Hospital.  Kontio received graduate training in reproductive physiology at Michigan State University and earned his bachelor’s degree at Adrian College (1983).  He joined the SIU staff in 2008.

Victoria R. Gindlesperger is a senior embryologist.  Previously, she was fertility laboratory supervisor with Reproductive Medicine Associates of Texas and laboratory supervisor/senior clinical embryologist at University-McDonald Women’s Hospital and senior embryologist with the LIFE program at Mt. Sinai Medical Center.  Gindlesperger earned her bachelor’s degree at the Case Western Reserve University (1969).  She joined the SIU staff in 2009.
