Logo/Identity Overview

Southern Illinois University Carbondale, including the School of Medicine, has created comprehensive identity standards. The goal is to provide tools for the correct use of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale logo and the University’s three secondary logos, for the School of Law, the School of Medicine and Saluki Athletics.

Identity standards help us consistently and correctly market the University. All of us, whether we are faculty, staff or students, make an impression that is also associated with the University and the medical school. So it is important that those working with these logos be completely familiar with the standards. The University's Identity Standards will be available on-line and in printed form shortly. They will cover a variety of standards such as the correct placement of the logo on publications (centered on the lower front page or panel), the minimum size of the logo (window portion of the logo no smaller than 5/8 inch wide), and the correct Pantone color for the School of Medicine logos when printed (568 PMS).

These identity standards must be adhered to by individuals, colleges, schools, departments and units officially related to the University. They will apply to a variety of items including stationery, publications, newsletters, exhibits, signs, web sites, invitations, slide shows, posters, forms, vehicles, promotional items and licensed clothing.

A logo is not a design element, but rather a 'signature,' indicating that materials are produced by and for the SIUC family. The SIUC logos are a unique set of designs and may not be accurately reproduced with any typeface. They must not be hand drawn, scanned or modified in any way and should be reproduced only from authorized electronic files. Simply "eyeballing" a logo and trying to reproduce it will invariably produce differences that may be minor, but will detract from the design and its branding capability.

School of Medicine Logo

The Carbondale campus changed its logo in 2005 from the 'rising sun' to a window frame showing an outline of Pulliam Hall on campus. The School of Medicine received permission to develop its own logo, which was designed to match the look for the SIUC logo. The same window shape was used, with the letters S-I-U with a snake wrapped around the "I" (symbolizing the snake of Aesculapius, the Greek god of medicine and healing). The same type faces are used, but all in green.

The Physicians & Surgeons (P&S) logo combines the School of Medicine logo with the "Physicians & Surgeons" name. It should appear on all P&S communications and is to be used for clinical communication on behalf of the School of Medicine.

The 'rising sun' logo or any other previous School or P&S logo is no longer to be used. Old logos as well as secondary logos create the same visual confusion and are no longer approved for daily use.

As current supplies with old logos or secondary logos are exhausted, any new or reprinted materials should follow the new standards. For the School of Medicine, which introduced its new logo this year, all out-of-date stationery will be phased out by June 30, 2006, and the new logo should appear on all publications by December 31, 2006, and on all web pages by March 31, 2007. No previous versions of the School of Medicine logo are to be used on any new publications, web sites, promotional items, etc.

Questions involving the School of Medicine’s logo and its use will be answered in the identity standards manual. Additional questions can be directed to the School of Medicine's Office of Public Affairs in Springfield, 217-545-2155 or publicaffairs@siumed.siu.edu . Questions about the University logos can be directed to SIUC's Office of Media & Communication Resources at 618-453-2276 or by email at siucnews@siu.edu.

Two small, low-resolution files of the logo are available for placement in the upper left-hand corner of a form or poster presentation. The form logo, approx. 1 inch by 2 inches, is to be used for medical school forms where a logo is needed (not all forms must carry a logo). This logo file should not be used for any other use (such as stationery items created using desktop publishing software or higher quality printing projects including publications.) A poster logo, approx. 3 by 5 inches, is available for use on poster presentations prepared for professional meetings.

The logo is being used on stationery items -- letterhead, envelopes and business cards. All of these items must be ordered through the campus printing services and not from any outside vendor. Printing & Duplicating Services in Springfield has templates available using the new standards for these items -- both the School and Physicians & Surgeons versions are available. Printing and Duplicating Services in Carbondale also has the logo files and corresponding templates for Carbondale offices and departments. Samples of the letterhead, envelopes and business cards and details about ordering stationery, are posted on the Printing & Duplicating Services web site. See the link on the left for University Identity Standards.

Three Word documents are available for fax, memo and Digital Communique. These are posted in color but can be printed in color or black-and-white. The Digital Communique can be used for official correspondence that needs to be sent electronically, such as a letter of recommendation. PowerPoint presentations should start with the main slide, showing the complete logo, and continue with individual slides with the small ‘bug’ version of the logo in the lower right-hand corner.

Web page templates have been developed for use by departments and units in revising their Web pages to incorporate the new logo and conform to University Web policies. Questions may be directed to webdev@siumed.edu.
