11.25.03 Healthy Eating for the Holidays Holiday gatherings mean good times with family and friends, but for many people with dietary restrictions, parties play havoc with good eating plans. The good foods associated with holiday meals are often a time of stress for people on restricted diets, whether they are trying to lose weight or watch their blood sugar or cholesterol. Amy Olson, registered dietian at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, says people on restricted diets should try to maintain good eating habits. SOUND BITE: " . . . eat regularly throughout the day rather than waiting until a certain event comes and then over eating because you're really hungry. Try to get a good balanced diet throughout the day including plenty of fruits and vegetables and an low fat proteins and that so you're not so hungry for those foods when they appear." Olson suggests people on diets need to limit their sodium intake, which is high in foods like ham and turkey that is basted or plumped up with a brine solution. Creamy sauces and rich deserts are other items to watch for, especially for diabetics and people who are watching their cholesterol intake. She says keeping a "can do" attitude is most important. SOUND BITE: ". . . get a variety of foods is important to remember and try to eat in moderation. And you're moderation and my moderation might be different definitions. But try to stop eating when you're pleasantly full, rather than continuing to eat until you feel like you have to lie down to survive and continue to drink plenty of beverages throughout the day and to get a wide variety of vegetables." Olson says observing other healthy behaviors like getting the recommended amount of sleep and exercise, and drinking plenty of fluids will help you follow through on healthy eating. Anyone needing dietary guidance should see their family doctor.
