8/2/05 Psoriasis Psoriasis is a common skin disorder that is viewed with concerns by many because of some misconceptions. But it is not contagious. Psoriasis is a common skin disorder that affects about 5 million people in the United States. People with psoriasis have inherited genes that create an overactive immune system, which causes skin lesions. It is not an infection and is not contagious says Dr. Christine DeWitt, dermatology resident physician at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, who explains psoriasis symptoms. SOUND BITE: " … all surfaces of the skin can be involved. You can have scalp and nail involvement. The most classic spots are circular, scaly, itchy patches, often with a silver scale on the surface are the elbows, the knees, the lower back, the belly button." Dr. DeWitt says environmental factors such as stress, trauma and sunburns can cause a psoriasis flare-up. Bacterial infections including strep throat is often associated with the disorder, especially in children. Although there is not a cure for psoriasis, Dr. DeWitt says some treatments options are available. SOUND BITE: "There are two active ingredients, tar and salicylic acid. Any ingredients or any products with those ingredients can help to decrease inflammation and remove portions of the scales. Even bland moisturizers - white thick creams can help to lubricate the scaly patches. But, it usually only works for limited areas of psoriasis." Other treatments include topical steroids as well as Vitamins D- and A-type preparations, phototherapy, and oral and injected medications. Anyone with psoriasis symptoms should see their primary care physician, who may refer them to a dermatologist for further evaluation and possible treatment. |
