JUNE 2004 June 23 -To Your Health Lecture Set -- Staying healthy is the focus of this public program. June 23 - Two SIU Med School Employees Honored -- SIU names supervisor of the year and employee of the year at a recognition ceremony. June 22 - SIU Med Student Selected to Participate in Symposium -- A third-year medical student will participate in the third annual Paul Ambrose Health Promotion Student Leadership Symposium in June in Washington, D.C. June 15 - SIU Cancer Institute Moving Ahead with Building, Research Developments -- Progress on developing the SIU Cancer Institute in Springfield is gaining momentum with a decision on the location for the facility and expansion underway in research efforts. June 9 - SIU Med School Sponsors Ethnic Heritage Day -- An celebration featuring Italian foods, artifacts and a brief talk by John Bucari, consular correspondent for the Illinois Italian Consulate General in Chicago, will be held June 15 at the School. June 3 - SIU Med School to Hold Golf Outing for Camp COCO -- The tenth annual charity golf outing benefiting the Camp COCO Children's Cancer Fund at the School of Medicine in Springfield tees off at noon Wednesday, June 23. June 3 - SIU Med School Part of National Parkinson's Disease Study -- Individuals with dementia and signs of Parkinson's disease are being recruited by the School as part of a national study of the drug quetiapine (Seroquel). MAY 2004 May 27 - Two from SIU Med School Receive National Honors -- A physician and a resident at the School's family medicine residency program in Carbondale, will participate in the American Medical Student Association Foundation's Leaderships Rural Health Seminar Series. May 26 - SIU Med School Offers New Procedure for Prostate Cancer Patients -- Surgery physicians at the School are performing a new procedure to help men deal with a possible side effect of their prostate cancer treatment. (photo) May 26 - SIU Med School Receives NIH Grant to Study Hearing -- A research physician was awarded a three-year federal grant from the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communicative Disorders to study the mechanisms by which the anti-cancer drug, cisplatin, causes damage to the inner ear. May 18 - SIU Med School Announces Research Symposium Awards -- Nine medical and graduate students and resident physicians received top awards in the 14th annual Combined Research Symposium at the School. May 18 - SCOPE 2004 is Published -- The eleventh annual edition of SCOPE, the literary magazine of the School of Medicine, is published. May 13 - Commencement 2004 is Held -- SIU Med School graduates 73 physicians and 3 doctoral students in Springfield. May 6 - Fellowship Program Addresses Local Health Care Needs -- Health care providers at the School in Springfield and Quincy will participate in the Quentin N. Burdick Rural Health Interdisciplinary Fellowship Program to study and address local health care needs. May 6 - Epilepsy Study Underway -- Patients with epilepsy are being recruited by the School as part of a national study. May 6 - National Colitis Study Underway -- Adults are being recruited by the School as part of a national study of a new medication. May 5 - Cover the Uninsured Week Set -- To help raise awareness of the plight of the uninsured, SIU and its affiliated hospitals have organized a series of events to be held during the week May 10-16. APRIL 2004 April 28 - Med School Counselor Offers Advice to Reduce Stress -- Stress is an epidemic that's prevalent in the workplace. April 23 - Med School Students and Residents Elected to AOA Medical Society -- Fifteen new members have been inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical society. April 23 - Medical Student Receives National Fellowship -- Junior med student at the School, received an Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Student Research Fellowship for 2004. April 20 - Two Faculty Receive Honors -- Two employees from SIU School of Medicine received national honors. April 6 - Med School Expands Public Resources on Internet Homepage -- Updates to the School's homepage make more resources available to the public who use the Internet to access medical and health information. April 6 - Med School Building Telehealth Programs in Downstate Illinois -- Illinois physicians in eight downstate sites gather around TV monitors for a medical conference originating in Springfield. MARCH 2004 March 25 - To Your Health Lecture Set -- Forum on obstetrics and gynecology is the focus of this public program. March 18 - SIU Seniors and Residency Program Get Match News -- Senior medical students learned their matches to postgraduate training programs. March 12 -- Two Faculty Receive Honors -- Two SIU School of Medicine faculty have received national honors. March 10 -- New Voice Center Opens -- The School of Medicine and St. John's Hospital have opened a new center dedicated to the treatment of laryngeal and voice disorders. March 4 -- Enos School Displays Art -- Selected artwork by Enos students is displayed at Medical School. March 4 - Breast/Lung Support Group Set -- A combined meeting of breast and lung cancer support groups will meet this month. March 4 - Brain Awareness Week Activities Set -- A public forum on brain disease and aging highlight Brain Awareness Week, March 15-21. March 3 - Illinois Health Summit Releases Recommendations -- Recommendations to improve health care in rural and other underserved areas are released. March 1 - Head and Neck Cancer Study Underway -- Volunteers are being recruited in Springfield as part of a national clinical trial for the treatment of head and neck cancer. FEBRUARY 2004 JANUARY 2004 January 27 - Black History Month Activities Set -- Two public events will be held at the School to celebrate Black History Month. January 15 - Cancer and Genetics Program Offers Screenings/Risk Assessments -- This free public education event will be held in February at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 3000 S. Dirksen Parkway, Springfield and offers educational booths and various cancer screenings and risk assessments. January 15 - SIU Faculty Named Best Doctors -- Nineteen SIU physicians were included in the Best Doctors in America 2003-04 database. January 15 - Endowments Established at SIU -- Three endowments have been established at the School for medical research in breast cancer, pediatrics and cardiology. January 15 - Pediatric Neurologist Treats Rare Disorder -- An SIU physician treats patients from the U.S. and abroad who are diagnozed with opsoclonus-myoclonus symdrome (OCS). DECEMBER 2003 December 24 - Cancer and Genetics Program Offered -- A free public education event on cancer and genetics will be held in February at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 3000 S. Dirksen Parkway, Springfield. December 18 - St. John's Hospital and SIU announce hospitalist program -- Two SIU physicians are part of a new program in Springfield offering patients hospitalized at St. John's access to in-house physicians 24 hours a day. December 9 - RHI Partnership Announced -- Utlaut Memorial Hospital in Greenville and the School announce A new partnership bringing health care service to South Central Illinois. NOVEMBER 2003 November 18 - Facial Cosmetic Procedure Seminar Offered -- A free seminar on facial cosmetic surgery procedures will be held in December at The Plastic Surgery Institute, Baylis Medical Building (third floor), 747 N. Rutledge St., Springfield. November 17 - TOPS Introduced -- The Thoracic Oncology Program, developed at SIU School of Medicine, is designed to help patients and their families deal with lung cancer and other cancers of the chest. November 13 - Class Officers Announced -- Fifteen medical students have been elected officers, representatives and committee members for the Class of 2004 at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Carbondale. November 6 - Lung Awareness Program Offered -- A program to help smokers "outwit, outlast and overcome" smoking and lung cancer is being presented in November by the SIU Cancer Institute. November 4 - SIU Med School Honors Local Health Care Givers -- Three central Illinois health care givers have been honored for their service to patients with dementia by SIU. November 3 - SIU Physician Receives NIH Grant -- A research physician has been awarded a three-year federal grant from the National Institutes of Health as part of an international study of dementia and Down's syndrome. November 3 - Two SIU Researchers Receive Federal Grants -- Two grants were awarded to two SIU researchers to study tumor supressors in prostate cancer. October 30 - Med School Names New Associate Dean -- Chicago psychiatrist is named associate dean for education and curriculum and professor and chair of the medical education department at the School. October 21 - Employees Honored for Service -- SIU School of Medicine has honored 128 employees in Springfield, Carbondale, Decatur and Quincy for their years of service. October 20 - Diabetic Foot Screenings Offered -- Diabetics and people with diabetic-related foot problems are invited to a free foot screening in November as part of National Diabetes Awareness month. October 15 - Illinois Trauma Conference Set -- Current information on traumatic injuries as well as new and evolving treatment strategies is the focus of a conference for emergency medical service providers and nurses to be held Saturday October 25. October 10 - SIU Pediatric Oncology Receives Donation -- The Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation donated toys for pediatric oncology patients at the School. Octobert 10 - Med School Physician Receives Grant -- A physician at the School is the recipient of a three-year national grant from the Lupus Research Institute. October 10 - Med School Faculty Member Receives National Award -- A faculty member is the recipient of the Senior Scholar in Aging Award by the Ellison Medical Foundation. October 9 - Springfield Health Summit Targets Rural Needs -- "Charting A Health Care Agenda: Strategies for Rural and Underserved Illinois" is the title of a health care summit to be held, November 2-3, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Springfield. October 2 - Hometown Housecall Programs Begins -- A ten-part medical series, Hometown Housecall, will begin airing on WSEC/WMEC/WQEC - PBS for west central Illinois, this October. SEPTEMBER 2003 September 15 - Sixty-plus Towns Will Be Represented at SIU Doctors Fair -- Students, residents and faculty will meet representatives from health organizations at the 2002 Doctors Fair. September 10 - SIU Sponsors Men's Night Out with Syracuse Basketball Coach -- Facing life's challenges on and off the basketball court is the topic of a free men's health event 5:30 p.m. Wednesday September 24 in Springfield featuring Jim Boeheim, Syracuse University basketball coach and prostate cancer survivor. September 10 - Med School to Host 5th Annual Denim and Diamonds -- The Breast Center at SIU is hosting its fifth annual "Denim and Diamonds" fundraiser Saturday, October 11. September 9 - Med School Part of National Study of Dementia -- Adult men and women with a clinical diagnosis of dementia or probable Alzheimer's disease are being recruited by in Springfield as part of a national double-blind, randomized study underway at 33 sites. September 5 - Inhaler for Patients with COPD Being Tested at Med School -- Volunteers are being recruited in Springfield as part of a national study of a new inhaler delivery system for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. September 3 - Comprehensive Obesity Program Education Event Set -- An overview of the new Comprehensive Obesity Management Program (COMP) at SIU is the topic of a free public education event. September 2 - Local Obstetrics/Gynecology Practice Joins Med School -- Four physicians who made up the Sangamon Obstetricians & Gynecologists medical group in Springfield have joined the OB/GYN faculty. AUGUST 2003 August 20 - Comprehensive Obesity Program Available at SIU Med School -- A team of SIU medical and surgical specialists is now offering a Comprehensive Obesity Management Program, or COMP, to treat obesity. August 12 - Media Advisory -- Medical students in the class of 2007 start their medical training in Carbondale and receive symbolic White Coats. August 7 - Working With Your Child's Pediatrician -- SIU physician offers tips about what a parent should do to see that their children receive the best possible health care. August 6 - Doctors Fair is Planned -- Illinois communities are invited to register for the 2003 Doctors Fair, where students, residents and faculty meet with representatives from health organizations to talk about practice opportunities. August 6 - Support Groups Meet -- Two support group meetings for individuals with cancer and their families will be held this month at the SIU Cancer Institute in the institute's administrative offices at 320 E. Carpenter St. (second floor) in Springfield. JULY 2003 July 22 - Take Your Kid to Work Day Advisory -- A one-day program for the children of employees at the School. July 21 - Department of Pharmacology Receives Gift -- The School of Medicine is the recipient of testing equipment from Hamilton-Kinder Behavioral Testing Systems. July 11 - Med School Physician Receives National Honor -- Faculty member receives national award from the American Association of Family Practice and the Association of Family Practice Residency Directors. July 11 - Med School Physician Receives Honor -- Faculty member is recognized as Carbondale Mentor of the Year for 2002-03. July 8 - SIU Medical School Elects New Alumni Board Members -- New officers and eight board members are named to the School's Alumni Society Board of Governors. July 7 - SIU Organizes Camp COCO 2003 -- The 18th annual Camp COCO, sponsored by the School's Department of Pediatrics, hosts 85 campers with cancer and other blood disorders during its one-week session in July.
