Carlson New PR Director
Karen V. Carlson has been named director of Public Affairs and Community Relations at SIU School of Medicine. Carlson succeeds Nancy Zimmers, who retired from the position after 33 years.
Carlson joined SIU School of Medicine in 1999 as publications coordinator. She became editor of SIU School of Medicine’s ASPECTS Magazine in 2001. For the past several years, she also has coordinated SCOPE magazine, the student literary arts annual publication, and has overseen various special projects publicizing the School of Medicine and its programs. She has been employed as a copy editor at The State Journal-Register and was a communications intern at the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.
Carlson earned a master of arts degree in mass media communication in 1999 from the University of Illinois at Springfield. She received a bachelor’s degree in English in 1997 from Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Ill.
Carlson is a member of the Association for Women in Communications and the Public Relations Society of America. She is board member of Girls on the Run of Central Illinois. She is a 2003 graduate of Leadership Springfield.
Carlson lives in Springfield with her husband, James Hawker, and their daughter, Alaina.
