Hand and Foot Massages Available to Cancer Patients at SCI

Hand and foot massage, tailored to cancer patients, is now available at Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The service is free to cancer patients.

Janet Hatmaker, a certified massage therapist who has a background in nursing and chaplaincy, will provide the service at the cancer institute, 315 W. Carpenter St., Springfield on the SIU School of Medicine campus.

Hatmaker has been trained in massage for cancer patients and has been a massage therapist since 1992. “Massage will allow the patient to relax during a difficult experience,” Hatmaker said. “It is a very soothing feeling.”

Ellen Brotzman-Desart, education coordinator for SCI’s Side-by-Side Wellness Center, said hand and foot massage will be offered primarily in the infusion area for a few hours one day per week.
