Med Students Hold Fundraisers for Mission Trip

Medical students at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine will sponsor two fundraising events in September.  Proceeds from the events will be used to support a medical mission trip to Honduras, where the students will help provide basic health care to people in that country.

Wine tasting will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, September 8, at Corkscrew Wine Emporium, 2613 Chatham Road in Springfield.

Ice cream night is scheduled from 3 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, September 13, at Cold Stone Creamery, 124 S. Sixth St., downtown Springfield.

Admission to both events is free.  A percentage of the sales will be donated by the merchants to help pay for the medical mission trip including the cost of medications and supplies needed to treat the under-served communities in Honduras.  The goal is to raise $5,000. Both events are sponsored by SIU’s Interdisciplinary Network for Outreach, a student interest group that helps facilitate members serving both global and local communities through health-related outreach projects.

SIU School of Medicine’s mission is to assist the people of central and southern Illinois in meeting their health care needs through education, service, research and community service.  For more information, call SIU’s Call Center, 217-545-8000.  Its web site is
