Ahead with Building, Research Developments -- Progress on developing
the SIU Cancer Institute in Springfield is gaining momentum with a decision
on the location for the facility and expansion underway in research efforts.

Ethnic Heritage Day -- An celebration featuring Italian foods,
artifacts and a brief talk by John Bucari, consular correspondent for
the Illinois Italian Consulate General in Chicago, will be held

Outing for Camp COCO -- The tenth annual charity golf outing benefiting
the Camp COCO Children's Cancer Fund at the School of Medicine in Springfield

and signs of Parkinson's disease are being recruited by the School as

May 27 - Two at SIU Med School Receive
2004 Humanism Award -- A faculty member and graduating senior from
the School in Springfield have received the 2004 Leonard Tow Humanism
in Medicine Awards.

Receive National Honors -- A physician and a resident at the School's
family medicine residency program in Carbondale, will participate in the
American Medical Student Association Foundation's Leaderships Rural Health
Seminar Series.

Procedure for Prostate Cancer Patients -- Surgery physicians at
the School are performing a new procedure to help men deal with a possible

NIH Grant to Study Hearing -- A research physician was awarded
a three-year federal grant from the National Institute of Deafness and
Other Communicative Disorders to study the mechanisms by which the anti-cancer
drug, cisplatin, causes damage to the inner ear.

School Announces Research Symposium Awards -- Nine medical
and graduate students and resident physicians received top awards in the
14th annual Combined Research Symposium at the School.

is Published -- The eleventh annual edition of SCOPE, the literary

Awarded -- A research scientist at the Med School received a one-year
grant from the American Cancer society.

Residents Elected to AOA Medical Society -- Fifteen new members
have been inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical society.

Activities Set -- Two public events will be held at the School
to celebrate Black History Month.
January 15 - Cancer and Genetics
Program Offers Screenings/Risk Assessments -- This free public
education event will be held in February at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 3000
S. Dirksen Parkway, Springfield and offers educational booths and various
cancer screenings and risk assessments.

Best Doctors -- Nineteen SIU physicians were included in the Best
Doctors in America 2003-04 database.

Treats Rare Disorder -- An SIU physician treats patients from the

Program Offered -- A free public education event on cancer and
genetics will be held in February at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, 3000 S. Dirksen

December 18 - St. John's Hospital
and SIU announce hospitalist program -- Two SIU physicians are
part of a new program in Springfield offering patients hospitalized at
St. John's access to in-house physicians 24 hours a day.
December 9 - RHI Partnership
Announced -- Utlaut Memorial Hospital in Greenville and the School
announce A new partnership bringing health care service to South Central
Illinois.

November 26 - Director of SIU
Cancer Institute Resigns -- The director of the SIU Cancer Institute
announced he will resign and the associate director of clinical services
for the Institute will become interim director.
November 18 - Facial Cosmetic Procedure
Seminar Offered -- A free seminar on facial cosmetic surgery procedures
will be held in December at The Plastic Surgery Institute, Baylis Medical
Building (third floor), 747 N. Rutledge St., Springfield.
November 17 - TOPS Introduced --
The Thoracic Oncology Program, developed at SIU School of Medicine,
is designed to help patients and their families deal with lung cancer
and other cancers of the chest.

Offered -- A program to help smokers "outwit, outlast and
overcome" smoking and lung cancer is being presented in November
by the SIU Cancer Institute.
November 4 - SIU Med School Honors
Local Health Care Givers -- Three central Illinois health care
givers have been honored for their service to patients with dementia by
SIU.
November 3 - SIU Physician Receives
NIH Grant -- A research physician has been awarded a three-year
federal grant from the National Institutes of Health as part of an international
study of dementia and Down's syndrome.

Receive Federal Grants -- Two grants were awarded to two SIU researchers
to study tumor supressors in prostate cancer.

New Associate Dean -- Chicago psychiatrist is named associate dean
for education and curriculum and professor and chair of the medical education
department at the School.
October 21 - Employees Honored
for Service -- SIU School of Medicine has honored 128 employees
in Springfield, Carbondale, Decatur and Quincy for their years of service.
October 20 - Diabetic Foot Screenings
Offered -- Diabetics and people with diabetic-related foot problems
are invited to a free foot screening in November as part of National Diabetes
Awareness month.
October 15 - Illinois Trauma Conference
Set -- Current information on traumatic injuries as well as new
and evolving treatment strategies is the focus of a conference for emergency
medical service providers and nurses to be held Saturday October 25.
October 10 - SIU Pediatric Oncology
Receives Donation -- The Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation
donated toys for pediatric oncology patients at the School.
