JUNE 2005
June 29 - Study of Dermatitis Underway at SIU Med School -- Patients are being recruited as part of a national study for the treatment of eczema, or atopic dermatitis.

June 29 - Med School Offers Seminar on Enlarged Prostate Treatments -- SIU urologist discusses new options for treatment of an enlarged prostate.

June 29 - SITC Completes 6 Years Building Trauma Network for Central Illinois -- The SITC completes its sixth year and moves hospital locations July 1.

June 24 - Med School Physician Provides Assistance to Tsunami Victims --Med School physician was one of two American psychiatrists invited this spring to southeast Asia to give aid to tsunami victims.

June 23 - Faculty Promotions Awarded -- Academic promotions are awarded to 12 faculty members at the medical school in Springfield and Carbondale.

June 22 - Area Physician is “Mentor of the Year” -- Marion physician is honored for his work as a volunteer mentor to first-year medical students at SIU School of Medicine in Carbondale.

June 10 - Two Receive 2005 Humanism Award -- A faculty member and a 2005 SIU graduate receive the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award.

June 10 - New Chair Named -- Anesthesiologist at Memorial Medical Center has been named chair of anesthesia department at SIU.

June 9 - Three Receive Pharmacology Awards -- An SIU 2005 graduate, an SIU researcher and a college student receive awards.

MAY 2005
May 25 - SIU Med School Participates In National Alzheimer’s Disease -- Probable Alzheimer's disease patients are being recruited as part of a national study underway at 35 U.S. sites.

May 25 - National Clinical Trial for Alzheimer’s Disease Underway at SIU Med School -- Patients are being recruited by the Center for Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders in Springfield as part of a phase II trial of the investigational drug, ONO-2506PO.

May 18 - SIU Med School Honors Two Employees -- Two civil service employees are honored for exemplary work.

May 16 - SIU Med School Honors Two Alumni Graduates -- Two graduates will receive the medical school’s distinguished alumni award during commencement in Springfield.

May 13 - Commencement 2005 is Held -- SIU Med School graduates 67 physicians and 1 doctoral student in Springfield. Commencement address by Dr. Moy, dean emeritus

May 9 - SCOPE 2005 is Published -- The twelfth annual edition of SCOPE, the literary magazine of the School of Medicine, is published.

May 5 - SIU Med School Offers Alzheimer's Disease Conference -- Synchronizing Science and Support is the topic of the tenth annual conference on Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias.

May 3 - SIU Med School Announces Research Symposium Awards -- Nine medical and graduate students and resident physicians received top awards in the 16th annual Combined Research Symposium at the School.

May 2 - SIU Med School Announces New Members to Honor Society -- Eight new members have been inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical society.

May 2 - Cover the Uninsured Week Set -- To help raise awareness of the plight of the uninsured, SIU and its affiliated hospitals have organized a series of events to be held during the week May 2-8.

APRIL 2005
April 29 - SIU Med School, St. John’s Name Pediatrics Chair and New Medical Director -- A pediatrician with nearly 25 years of clinical experience is named chair of pediatrics department and new medical director of St. John's Children's Hospital. (photo)

April 28 - Public Universities Outline 'Bill of Health' Initiative to Protect Access to Healthcare in Illinois -- Proposal urges dedicated state funding to train physicians, dentists, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare practitioners

April 25 - SIU Med School to Begin Conversion to Electronic Medical Records -- The Med School and SIU P&S will convert to an electronic medical records program in July 2006.

April 25 - Sangamon County Art Exhibit -- Sixty plus pieces of artwork will be exhibited through Friday, May 20, in the second floor lobby of the School of Medicine, 801 N. Rutledge St., Springfield.

April 24 - Physician Receives Honor -- Faculty member is recognized as SIUC's Outstanding Scholar for 2004-05.

April 19 - Palliative Care Conference Set for Health Care Providers -- "Pain, Illness and Palliative Care" is the topic of a medical education conference for primary care physicians and other health care providers.

April 7 - Med School Receives Federal Grant-- A research scientist at the School of Medicine has been awarded a three-year grant from the U.S. Army.

April 6 - Medical Student Receives National Fellowship -- Junior med student at the School, received an Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Student Research Fellowship for 2005.

April 6 - SIU Med Students to Host Annual AMA 5K Run -- Proceeds from the 11th annual American Medical Association 5K Run will go to M.E.R.C.Y. Communities.

MARCH 2005
March 21 - SIU Med School Sponsors Parkinson’s Disease Educational Forum -- Free, educational program in the Wedeberg Conference Center at Memorial Medical Center, First and Miller Streets in Springfield.

March 21 - Med School Offers Free Head and Neck Cancer Screenings -- Free head and neck cancer screenings in the SIU otolaryngology clinic (room 5B) on the fifth floor of St. John's Pavilion, 301 N. 8th Street, Springfield as part of National Oral Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week.

March 17 - SIU Seniors and Residency Programs Get Match News -- Senior medical students learned their matches to postgraduate training programs.

March 4 - SIU Med School to Display Enos School Artwork -- Selected artwork by Enos students is displayed at Medical School.

March 4 -- Brain Awareness Week Activities Set -- A public forum on brain disease and aging highlight Brain Awareness Week, March 14-20.

March 2 - SIU Med School and Lawrence County Memorial Hospital Announce Partnership -- A grant of $112,302 is helping fund the purchase of a new mammographic imaging unit as part of the School's Rural/Downstate Health Initiative's new partnership in Highland.

FEBRUARY 2005
February 15 - Two SIU Employees are Honored -- Two employees from SIU received professional honors.

February 10 - SIU Cancer Institute Design Finalized, Summer Groundbreaking Planned -- The new SIU Cancer Institute in Springfield will serve as a center of care and hope for patients from around the state as well as a dramatic new front door entrance to the Med School campus in Springfield.

February 1 - Med School and Franklin County Receive Grant -- A mobile school health clinic will begin serving students at two Franklin County high schools this fall, thanks to a $375,000 grant from the Illinois Children’s Healthcare Foundation.

JANUARY 2005
January 31 - Med School Receives NIH Grant -- A research scientist at the School of Medicine has been awarded a four-year grant from the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

January 24 - Med School Recruiting Patients for National TAA Trial -- Patients are being recruited by the Division of Vascular Surgery at SIU as part of a clinical trial for the treatment of thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAAs).

January 24 - SIU, LLCC and UIS Bring Dick Gregory for Black History Talk -- Black History Month will be jointly celebrated by the local higher education community Friday, February 25.

January 21 - Med School Makes Speakers Bureau Available -- The Speakers Bureau at the School is providing speakers to community groups for programs about up-to-date medical information.

January 19 - Two SIU Faculty Are Honored -- Two faculty from SIU received national honors.

January 19 - Whooping Cough Cases Increasing -- SIU pediatrician finds the number of whooping cough cases on the rise.

January 10 - SIU Sponsors Fifth Cancer Symposium -- "Cancer Updates: Advances in Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment" is the topic for the annual cancer symposium in Springfield.

January 6 - Alzheimer Educational Forum -- Elder abuse and the dementia population is the topic of a public forum offered by the School.

January 5 - Amputee Clinic Opens -- An orthopaedic surgeon from SIU and two area prosthetists from Orthotic and Prosthetic Associates join to create a multidisciplinary clinic to help amputees.

January 4 - Losing To Win Offered -- A ten-week weight loss program, sponsored by Department of Internal Medicine, is offered this winter .

DECEMBER 2004
December 28 - SIU Med School and Local Physicians Team Up to Train Doctors -- More than 140 practicing family physicians in 80 Illinois communities are helping train future physicians.

NOVEMBER 2004
November 30 - SIU Med School Sponsors World War II Exhibit -- A multi-media exhibit commemorating the contributions of orthopaedic surgeons during WWII is being sponsored in Springfield in December by the orthopaedic surgery division at the School of Medicine.

November 24 - SIU Med School Honors Local Health Care Givers -- Three central Illinois health care givers have been honored for their service to patients with dementia by SIU.

November 23 - Two SIU Faculty are Honored -- Two employees from SIU received professional honors.

November 23 - Class Officers Announced -- Sixteen senior medical students have been elected officers, representatives and committee members for the Class of 2005 at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.

November 18 - Two SIU Faculty are Honored -- Two employees from SIU received national honors from AAMC.

November 16 - American Cancer Society Awards Grant -- An Institutional Research Grant totaling $127,500 has been awarded to the SIU Cancer Institute.

November 16 - National Clinical Trials Underway at SIU Med School -- Five national Alzheimer's disease clinical drug trials are being conducted at the School and its Center for Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders in Springfield.

November 15 - SIU Med School Researchers Searching for Effective Alzheimer's Disease Treatments -- Research is being conducted and new treatments are being tested at the School and its Center for Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders in the hope of finding a more effective treatment for patients.

November 12 - SIU Med School and St. Joseph's Hospital Announce Partnership -- A grant of $45,073 is helping fund the purchase of a new high speed Internet-based teleradiology system as part of the School's Rural/Downstate Health Initiative's new partnership in Highland.

November 4 - SIU Med School Receives NIH Grant to Study Diabetes-Related Complications -- A research scientist at the Med School in Springfield has received a three-year grant from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders.

November 3 - SIU Cancer Institute to Address How to Quit Smoking -- Educating smokers on the health risks and providing ideas and benefits for quitting are the subjects of a public education event.

November 3 - Alzheimer Educational Forum -- Alzheimer disease is the topic for a public forum offered by the School and the Springfield chapter of Alzheimer's Association.

November 3 - Employees Honored for Service -- SIU School of Medicine has honored 121 employees in Springfield, Carbondale, Decatur and Quincy for their years of service.

November 2 - SIU Med School Names Interim Associate Dean -- The director of laboratory animal medicine and professor of pharmacology at the School has been named interim associate dean for research and faculty affairs.

OCTOBER 2004
October 29 - SIU Med School Researchers Report Findings at National Meeting -- Two research scientists at the Med School reported their findings about the long-term effects of constant estrogen therapy.

October 22 - Breast Cancer Awareness Program Offered -- Breast cancer awareness is the focus of a free, public program presented by the Breast Center at the School.

October 20 - SIU Med School Offers Diabetes Education Program -- Individuals with diabetes and their families are invited to a free educational event in November sponsored by the Division of Endocrinology.

October 15 - SIU Med School Receives NIH Grant to Study Diabetes -- A research scientist at the Med School in Springfield has received a two-year grant from the National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorder.

October 13 - SIU Med School Sponsors Ethnic Heritage Day -- An celebration featuring German foods, artifacts and talks by three members of DANK, the German American National Congress, will be held October 19 at the School.

October 13 - SIU Med School Recruiting for Emphysema Study -- Patients are being recruited by the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at SIU as part of a national clinical trial for the treatment of emphysema.

October 12 - Diabetic Foot Screenings Offered -- Diabetics and people with diabetic-related foot problems are invited to a free foot screening in November as part of National Diabetes Awareness month.

SEPTEMBER 2004
September 29 - SIU Med Students Complete Mentored Research Experiences -- Nine sophomore SIU med students completed their Mentored Professional Enrichment Experiences (MPEE) in September.

September 23 - Two Med School Faculty Recently Received Professional Honors -- Two employees from the Med School received national honors.

September 22 - SIU Med School Receives National Grant to Study Pediatric Disorder -- A researcher at the Med School received a grant from the national Tourette Syndrome Association to the study the immunology of Tourette syndrome.

September 17 - Staying Healthy is Focus for To Your Health Lecture -- Healthy lungs is the topic of a free, public program, part of a "To Your Health" series being presented by the School and the Springfield Ministerial Alliance.

September 16 - Seventy Towns Needing Physicians Will Be Represented at SIU Doctors Fair -- Students, residents and faculty will meet representatives from health organizations at the 2004 Doctors Fair.

AUGUST 2004
August 24 - SIU Med School Receives NIH Grant to Study Hearing Loss -- A research scientist at the Med School in Springfield received a two-year grant from the National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of Health.

August 24 - SIU Sponsors Men's Night Out with Cardinal Hall of Fame Pitcher -- Facing life's challenges on and off the baseball field is the topic of a free men's health event 5:30 p.m. Thursday September 16 in Springfield featuring Bob Gibson, hall of fame pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals and prostate cancer survivor.

August 4 - Med School First Year Students Participate in Ceremony -- Medical students in the class of 2008 start their medical training in Carbondale and receive symbolic White Coats.

August 4 - SIU Med School Receives Breast Cancer Research Grant -- A research scientist at the Med School in Springfield received a two-year grant from the William E. McElroy Charitable Foundation.

July 26 - SIU Springfield Center for Family Medicine Hosts Fun Run in Girard -- The first annual Fun Run hosted by SIU Springfield Center for Family Medicine will be held this Saturday, July 31, as part of Girard Days.

July 14 - SIU Med School and Lewis Memorial Partner to Improve Quality of Life -- Some Springfield nursing home residents are enjoying a better quality of life with implementation of the Eden Alternative, an innovative model of nursing home care.

July 6 - SIU Organizes Camp COCO 2004 -- The 19th annual Camp COCO, sponsored by the School's Department of Pediatrics, hosts 94 campers with cancer and other blood disorders during its one-week session in July.
