JUNE 2006 June 26 - Med School Honors Employees -- Two civil service employees and a team in the Department of Internal Medicine were honored. June 23 - Two Receive 2006 Humanism Award -- A faculty member and a 2006 SIU graduate receive the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. June 19 - SIU Med School Announces Research Symposium Awards -- Nine medical and graduate students and resident physicians received top awards in the 16th annual Combined Research Symposium at the School. June 15 - SIU Med School Sponsors Diabetes Education Event -- Type 1 diabetes is the topic of a public education program presented by the endocrinology division at the School of Medicine. June 16 - Medical District Expo -- The Sangamon County Medical Society hosted a "Medical District Expo" in Springfield, showcasing the first edition of Medical Miracles. June 14 - Interim Chair Named-- Professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology has been named interim chair of Obstetrics & Gynecology department. June 7 - Clinical Trial for Head and Neck Cancer -- Patients are being recruited by the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU as part of an investigator-initiated study. MAY 2006 May 17 - SCOPE 2006 is Published -- The thirteenth annual edition of SCOPE, the literary magazine of the School of Medicine, is published. May 9 - SIU Med School to Graduate 75 New Physicians -- Commencement for the 32nd graduating class of SIU School of Medicine will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 20.
May 2 - Med School Offers Free Screening -- Dermatology physicians and residents conduct free skin cancer screenings in Springfield. May 1 - Interim Chair Named -- Associate Professor in Medical Humanities named Interim Chair of Medical Humanities Department. APRIL 2006 April 17 - SIU Med Students to Host Annual AMA 5K Run -- Proceeds from the 12th annual American Medical Association 5K Run will go to M.E.R.C.Y. Communities. April 14 - Med School Physician Receives Honor -- A faculty physician receives a teaching honor. April 7 - SIU Physician Offers New Cancer Treatment -- An SIU gynecologist is offering a new treatment for ovarian cancer. April 5 - International Alzheimer's Disease Symposium Update -- Physicians and scientists in the fields of Alzheimer’s disease treatment and dementia research will participate in the International Symposium on the Advances in Alzheimer Therapy. April 4 - Med School Offers Free Head and Neck Cancer Screenings -- Free head and neck cancer screenings in the SIU otolaryngology clinic (room 5B) on the fifth floor of St. John's Pavilion, 301 N. 8th Street, Springfield as part of National Oral Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week. MARCH 2006 March 27 - Faculty Member Receives Award -- A surgery faculty member receives John P. Hubbard Award. March 23 - Mobile School Health Clinic Announced -- The Care-A-Van, a mobile school health clinic, will serve students at two Franklin County high schools. March 16 - SIU Seniors and Residency Programs Get Match News -- Senior medical students learned their matches to postgraduate training programs. March 2 - New Chair Named -- A surgeon has been named chair of the plastic surgery division at SIU. FEBRUARY 2006 February 8 - SIU Med School to Study Exercise in Cancer Survivors -- A faculty physician at SIU received a two-year grant from the American Cancer Society Illinois Division. JANUARY 2006 January 26 - Med School Testing Treatment for Herpes -- Adults are being recruited by the SIU Division of Dermatology as part of a national study to evaluate the use of the drug valaciclovir for patients with genital herpes. January 23 - SIU Med School Names Chair -- SIU physician has been named chair of the otolaryngology head and neck surgery division at Med School in Springfield. January 23 - Black History Month Activities Set -- Two public events will be held at the School to celebrate Black History Month. January 17 - Med School Makes Speakers Bureau Available -- The Speakers Bureau at the School is providing speakers to community groups for programs about up-to-date medical information. January 17 - Study of Tinnitus Underway at SIU Med School-- Patients are being recruited to evaluate the use of retraining therapy, a tailored therapy using informational counseling combined with sound treatment. Janaury 13 - SIU Offers Talk by Cancer Physician/Patient -- A public education program for cancer patients and survivors is being offered in February by the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine. January 13 - SIU Sponsors Sixth Cancer Symposium -- "Cancer Updates: Caring for the Patient with Cancer " is the topic for the annual cancer symposium in Springfield. January 3 - Med School Receives Grant to Study Medical Attitudes Toward Older Adults -- A faculty physician at SIU received a three-year national grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundation. DECEMBER 2005 December 23 - Med School to Display Posters of Jewish Women Scientists -- Posters depicting the international contributions Jewish women have made in the field of medicine will be on display at the Med School. December 13 - SIU Med School Enrolls Visiting Student -- A fourth-year medical student from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans has temporarily enrolled at SIU Med School. December 13 - SIU Med School Sponsors Ethnic Heritage Day -- An Ethnic Heritage Day celebration featuring German and Nordic cultures will be held in Springfield. December 2 - SIU Med School Physician Receives Two National Grants-- A faculty researcher received a one-year grant from the Pediatric Opsoclonus-Myoclonus Syndrome Research Foundation and a two-year grant from the Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation. NOVEMBER 2005 November 28 - SIU Med School and Memorial Medical Center Announce Endowed Chair -- The Elvin G. Zook, M.D., Endowed Chair of Plastic Surgery at SIU Med School was announced in Springfield. November 22 - SIU Med School Honors Local Health Care Givers -- Three central Illinois health care givers have been honored for their service to patients with dementia by SIU and the Illinois Department of Aging. November 21 - Class Officers Announced -- Fourteen senior medical students have been elected officers, representatives and committee members for the Class of 2006 at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. November 4 - Major Donation To Aid Worldwide Cancer Research-- SimmonsCooper LLC, has pledged $10.2 million to fund a new cancer institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. November 4 - Med School and DCFS Co-Sponsor Child Abuse Conference -- Child abuse and neglect is the topic of a medical education conference for physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants as well as allied health professionals. November 4 - SIUC Launches Capital Campaign -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale launched its comprehensive capital campaign with a goal to raise at least $100 million. November 2 - Rural Health Task Force Announced -- A new legislative task force can play a key role in increasing access to quality health care in rural and other underserved areas. OCTOBER 2005 October 25 - State Public Health Director Awards Two Research Grants to SIU School of Medicine -- Researchers receive Penny Severns Breast, Cervical and Ovarian Cancer Research Fund Grants October 21 - Minority Students Begin Studies at Med School -- Seventeen minority students in the Class of 2009 started their training in August. October 12 - Basket Raffle for CMN -- A “Fantastic Basket” raffle is being held to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN). SEPTEMBER 2005 September 19 - Med Students Complete Research Experiences -- Sophomore medical students from the School of Medicine recently completed their Mentored Professional Enrichment Experiences (MPEE) with formal presentations to the medical school community in September. September 8 - SIU Med School Awards Contracts for Cancer Labs -- Construction contracts for cancer research laboratories at the Med School were approved by the SIU Board of Trustees at their meeting in September. September 6 - SIU Med School to Hold Job Fair -- An opportunity for the public to meet with representatives of various departments to discuss job opportunities at the Med School in Springfield. September 1 - Four Receive Honors -- Two faculty members and two staff members receive national honors. AUGUST 2005 August 30 - SIU Med School Receives Two Federal Grants to Study Breast Cancer -- Two research scientists at the School of Medicine have been awarded federal grants from the U.S. Army. August 17 - Towns Invited to Sign up for SIU Med School’s Doctors Fair -- Students, residents and faculty will meet representatives from health organizations at the 2005 Doctors Fair. August 15 - Annual Pearson Lecture Set -- The tenth annual Emmet F. Pearson Memorial Medical History Lecture at the Med School will be held August 29. August 11 - Med School, Illinois College and IDHS Honor Students -- Six Illinois College students were honored at the conclusion of an internship program at the Jacksonville Developmental Center. August 10 - Two Faculty Receive Honors -- Two research faculty members receive national honors. August 8 - Med School First Year Students Participate in Ceremony -- Medical students in the class of 2009 start their medical training in Carbondale and receive symbolic White Coats. August 4 - SIU Med School Sponsors Diabetes Education Event -- Type 1 diabetes is the topic of a public education program presented by the endocrinology division at the School of Medicine. August 4 - SIU Med School Receives Grant to Study Preeclampsia -- A faculty researcher at the Med School received a three-year national grant from the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation. JULY 2005 July 14 - Ground Broken for SIU Cancer Institute -- Ground has been broken for a permanent facility for the SIU Cancer Institute in Springfield. July 6 - Med School Names Associate Director for Research -- A professor of medical microbiology, immunology and cell biology at the medical school is named associate director for basic science for the SIU Cancer Institute. July 5 - SIU Organizes Camp COCO 2005 -- The 20th annual Camp COCO, sponsored by the School's Department of Pediatrics, hosts 120 campers with cancer and other blood disorders during its one-week session in July. |
