JUNE 2007 June 26 - SIU Organizes Camp COCO 2007 -- The 22nd annual Camp COCO, sponsored by the School's Department of Pediatrics, hosts more than 120 campers with cancer and other blood disorders during its one-week session in July. June 20 - Two Receive Honors -- Two students from SIU Med School receive awards at national meetings. June 14 - Two Receive Honors -- Two medical school faculty receive professional honors. June 7 - Two Receive 2007 Humanism Award -- A faculty member and a 2007 SIU graduate receive the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. June 1 - Two Receive Honors -- Two medical school faculty receive national honors. MAY 2007 May 29 - Two Present Research - A third-year student and a graduating senior present research. May 25 - Med School Receives Federal Grant -- A research scientist at the School of Medicine has received a three-year grant from the U.S. Army Medical Research Acquisition Activity to study the use of goldenrod extract as a therapy for prostate cancer. . May 23 - SIU Med School Announces Research Symposium Awards -- Eleven medical and graduate students and resident physicians received top awards in the 17th annual Combined Research Symposium at the School. May 16 - SCOPE 2007 is Published -- The fourteenth annual edition of SCOPE, the literary magazine of the School of Medicine, is published. May 11 - SIU Med Student Receives National Honor -- A third-year student received the 2007 Carolyn L. Kuckein Student Research Fellowship. Holly Hoefgen May 8 - SIU Med School to Graduate 69 New Physicians -- Commencement for the 33rd graduating class of SIU School of Medicine will be held at noon Saturday, May 19. May 7 - Faculty Promotions Awarded -- Academic promotions are awarded to 13 faculty members at the medical school in Springfield and Carbondale. May 1 - SIU Med School Receives NIH Grant -- A faculty member at the School of Medicine has received a two-year grant from the National Institute of Mental Health, a division of the National Institutes of Health, to study clinical competency of medical students. May 3 - Med School Wins National Awards -- The Educational Media Group (EMG) at the School of Medicine won three Bronze Telly Awards. APRIL 2007 April 20 - Sangamon County Art Exhibit -- Nearly 100 pieces of artwork will be exhibited through Friday, May 24, in the second floor lobby of the School of Medicine, 801 N. Rutledge St., Springfield. April 20 - SIU Med School Receives National Grant -- A research scientist will speak at the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU as part of a grant from Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company. April 19 - SIU Med Students Organize CTUW Services -- SIU School of Medicine, Illinois Dental Hygienists’ Association, GV Black Dental Society and Midwest Technical Institute will sponsor a free dental health screening. April 17 - Local Medical Organizations Sponsor Meeting -- A public program is being held May 2, to help address the plight of the uninsured in conjunction with Cover the Uninsured Week. April 11 - Southern Illinois Family Medicine Offers New Program -- A new sports medicine program in Carbondale will provide medical expertise to all types of athletes. April 2 - SIU Med Students to Host Annual AMA 5K Run -- Proceeds from the 13th annual American Medical Association 5K Run will go to M.E.R.C.Y. Communities. April 2- Med School Offers Free Head and Neck Cancer Screenings -- Free head and neck cancer screenings in the SIU otolaryngology clinic (room 5B) on the fifth floor of St. John's Pavilion, 301 N. 8th Street, Springfield as part of National Oral Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week. MARCH 2007 March 23 - Med School Hosts Forum -- Parkinson's Disease is the topic of a public education forum to be held in April. March 23 - Camp COCO Breakfast Set -- Knights of Columbus #364 is hosting a breakfast to benefit Camp COCO. March 22 - Med School Conducts National Clinical Trial -- Researchers in at the School of Medicine in Springfield are participating in an NIH sponsored clinical trial. March 22 - March of Dimes Awards Grant to St. John's Children's Hospital -- A $10,000 grant was awarded to the Springfield Perinatal Center at St. John's Children's Hospital. March 16 - Med School Begins Conversion to Electronic Health Records (EHR) -- The EHR system gathers all medical record information for patients at SIU’s clinical sites. March 15 - SIU Seniors and Residency Programs Get Match News -- Senior medical students learned their matches to postgraduate training programs. March 9 - Two From SIU Receive Honors -- Two faculty members received national honors. March 9 - SIU Med School to Display Enos School Artwork -- Selected artwork by Enos students is displayed at Medical School. March 7 - Med School Holds Job Fair -- Job opportunities for clinical support staff will be discussed at a job fair in March in Springfield. March 5 - Child From Chatham Represents Illinois in Washington, D.C. -- Young ambassador shares her medical experience as part of Children's Miracle Network program. FEBRUARY 2007 February 27 - SIU Med School Receives NIH Grant -- A research scientist at SIU receives a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health. Report February 22 - SIU Med School/Washington County Hospital Announce Partnership -- The School's Rural Health Initiative is helping fund the purchase of new software to automate the hospital’s billing process. February 14 -- SIU Physician Sees Patients in Effingham -- SIU pediatric cardiologist is seeing patients at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham. February 8 -- SIU Physician Supports Minority Donations to Blood Centers -- The Illinois Black Caucus calls for minorities across the state to become regular blood donors. February 5 - SIU Med School and ICHCF Announce Partnership -- Illini Community Health Care Foundation (ICHCF) is helping fund the start up of the Pike County Community Health Partnership (PCCHP). JANUARY 2007 Janaury 26 - SIU Offers Talk by Cancer Physician-- A public education program for cancer patients and survivors is being offered in February by the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine. January 19 - SIU Med School Offers New Master's Program -- SIU, in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Public Health, is offering a master of science degree concentrating in public health laboratory sciences. January 18 - Black History Month Activities Set -- Two public events will be held at the School to celebrate Black History Month. January 18 - SIU Med School Receives National Grants -- A faculty researcher at the School has been awarded two national grants to study cancer. January 4 - Med School Researchers Studying New Treatment for Emphysema -- Researchers in at the School of Medicine in Springfield are participating in an international, multi-center trial called EASE™ January 3 - Losing To Win Offered -- A ten-week weight loss program, sponsored by Department of Internal Medicine, is offered this winter . DECEMBER 2006 December 18 - Alum Donates New Book -- A graduate of the School of Medicine has donated 10,000 copies of his new book to the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU in Springfield. December 15 - Two Receive Honors -- Two faculty members at the School receive national honors. December 8 - SIU Med School Receives National Grant -- The School received a two-year grant as part of a national effort to improve the teaching of medical students in the public health needs of rural Americans. December 5 - SIU Med School Expands Neurology Services for Children and Adolescents -- Three faculty physicians now staff an expanded Division of Child and Adolescent Neurology at the School of Medicine in Springfield. NOVEMBER 2006 November 29 - SIU Med School Receives National Grant -- A research scientist at the School has been awarded a five-year federal grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. November 29 - Two Receive Honors -- Two faculty members at the School receive national honors. November 21 - SIU Research Scientist Awarded Patents -- A research scientist at the School has been awarded three U.S. patents and five international patents for the discovery of a new drug application. November 20 - Employees Honored for Service -- SIU School of Medicine has honored nearly 100 employees in Springfield, Carbondale, Decatur and Quincy for their years of service. November 17 - Med School Elects New Alumni Board Members -- Six board members have been named to the School's Alumni Society Board of Governors. November 7 - Mascot Elected for St. John's Children's Hospital -- A pair of kangaroos will represent the Children's Hopsital at hospital special events and community events. OCTOBER 2006 October 17 - American Cancer Society Special Friends Party Planned -- SIU medical students will share Halloween festivities with pediatric cancer patients and their sibblings. October 10 - IRHA Recognizes Rural Physicians -- Fourteen rural physicians were honored during an awards ceremony held in Springfield. October 5 - Mascot Candidates selected for St. John's Children's Hospital -- A St. Bernard dog and a pair of kangaroos are the two candidates for St. John's Children Hospital mascot. October 5 - Med Students Complete Research Experiences -- Sophomore medical students from the School of Medicine recently completed their Mentored Professional Enrichment Experiences (MPEE) with formal presentations to the medical school community in September. SEPTEMBER 2006 September 15 - Med School Receives Three McElroy Grants-- Three faculty members at the School of Medicine in Springfield have been awarded grants from the William E. McElroy Charitable Foundation for cancer research. September 14 - SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU Sponsors Men's Night Out -- Prostate screenings and men's health are the focus of a men's health event 5 p.m. Thursday October 12 in Springfield featuring Ron Santo, former Cubs third baseman and current Cubs broadcaster on WGN radio. AUGUST 2006 August 24 - IDPH Cancer Awards Include SIU Med School -- SIU School of Medicine received funding for two cancer research projects from the Penny Severns Breast, Cervical and Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. August 24 - SIU Med School Becomes Tobacco- and Smoke-Free -- The Med School expands its current smoke-free policy to become tobacco- and smoke-free on all campus buildings and grounds. August 7 - Med School First Year Students Participate in Ceremony -- Medical students in the class of 2010 start their medical training in Carbondale and receive symbolic White Coats. August 3 - Med School is Participating in a National Study of Diabetes -- Patients are being recruited as part of a national study to determine the effectiveness of a new investigational drug. JULY 2006 July 26 - SIU Med School Announces New Members to Honor Society -- Seven new members have been inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical society. July 19 - Faculty Promotions Awarded -- Academic promotions are awarded to eight faculty members at the medical school in Springfield and Carbondale. July 19 - Two Receive Honors -- Two Medical School faculty receive national honors. July 19 - Ethnic Heritage Day Set -- Ethnic Heritage Day celebration features Israeli cultural displays, artifacts and foods. July 18 - Mentor of the Year Awarded -- Carbondale physician is the 2005-06 Mentor of the Year at School of Medicine in Carbondale. July 17 - Physician Receives Honor -- Decatur Medical School faculty is president of Illinois Academy of Family Physcians July 11 - Med School to Host IRHA Worskhop -- Illinois Rural Health Association is holding a grant writing workshop. July 5 - SIU Organizes Camp COCO 2006 -- The 21st annual Camp COCO, sponsored by the School's Department of Pediatrics, hosts 1119 campers with cancer and other blood disorders during its one-week session in July.
