June 12 - Med School Receives Grants -- Two faculty researchers at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield have been awarded grants from the Illinois Department of Public Health.

June 11 - Endowed Lectureship Series Set -- SIU School of Medicine has endowed a fund to support a lecture series in medical education in memory of Dr. Patrick B. McVary Dr. Patrick McVary portrait.

MAY 2008
May 28 - Three Receive Awards -- Three researchers receive awards from SIU department of pharmacology.

May 28 - SIU Med School Announces Commencement Awards -- Honors and Awards were announced as part of the 34th commencement held in May inSpringfield.

May 16 - SIU Med School Announces Research Symposium Awards -- Nine medical and graduate students and resident physicians received top awards in the 18th annual Trainee Research Symposium at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. 

May 15 - Med School Awarded National Honor -- The Department of Family and Community Medicine received a "Top Ten Award" from the American Academy of Family Physicians.

May 14 - Two From Med School Receive Honors -- A med school instructor and a student receive national honors.

May 13 - Med School Recognizes Distinguished Alumni -- A cardiologist is the recipient of the medical school's distinguished alumni award for 2008.

May 13 - SIU Med School Announces New Members to Honor Society -- Eight new members have been inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical society.

May 12 - Med School Employee Awards Presented -- The Supervisor of the Year, Employee of the Year and Group Quality Award were given this spring.

May 9 -- SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute Receives Gift -- A gift honoring the Woerner and Robbins families has been made to the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute (SCCI) at SIU in Springfield. 

May 7 - Medical Director Named -- An SIU child psychiatrist has been named the medical director for the Lincoln Prairie Behavioral Health Center in Springfield.

May 6 - SIU Med School to Graduate 72 New Physicians -- Commencement for the 34th graduating class of SIU School of Medicine will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 24..

May 6 - SCOPE 2008 is Published -- The fifteenth annual edition of SCOPE, the literary magazine of the School of Medicine, is published.

APRIL 2008
April 30 - Alzheimer Conference Set -- Environmental risk factors, prevention measures and early intervention are the topics of a conference on Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders this spring.

April 28 - Faculty Promotions Awarded -- Academic promotions are awarded to 12 faculty members at the medical school in Springfield and Quincy.

April 25 - Annual Pearson Lecture Set -- The thirteenth annual Emmet F. Pearson Memorial Medical History Lecture at the Med School will be held May 8.

April 22 - Sangamon County Art Exhibit -- Nearly 100 pieces of artwork will be exhibited through Friday, May 23, in the second floor lobby of the School of Medicine, 801 N. Rutledge St., Springfield.

April 18 - SIU Med Students Organize CTUW Health Fair -- SIU School of Medicine will sponsor a free health fair.

April 18 - Two Receive Honors -- Two medical school employees receive national honors.

April 15 - Local Medical Organizations Sponsor Forum-- A public program is being held to help address the plight of the uninsured in conjunction with Cover the Uninsured Week.

April 14 - Association Honors School -- Illinois Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators honors Enos School.

April 11 - Med School Offers Health Training -- A partnership of medical, environmental, safety and public health experts are presenting a training conference focused on health care needs of rural areas.

April 7 - Med School Offers Free Head and Neck Cancer Screenings -- Free head and neck cancer screenings in the SIU otolaryngology clinic (room 5B) on the fifth floor of St. John's Pavilion, 301 N. 8th Street, Springfield as part of National Oral Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week.

April 2 - Camp COCO Fundraiser Set -- The Decatur Breakfast Optimist Club is sponsoring a fundraiser to benefit Camp COCO.

MARCH 2008
March 27 - Litchfield Primary Care Honored -- The Litchfield Family Practice Center and its family practice physicians who serve as preceptor teachers for Southern Illinois University School of Medicine have been honored by SIU's Department of Family and Community Medicine.

March 21 - Med School Recognizes Hospital -- SIU Med School recognizes Franklin Hospital in Benton for its support of its telehealth program.

March 20 - SIU Seniors and Residency Programs Get Match News -- Senior medical students learned their matches to postgraduate training programs.

March 20 - SIU Med Students to Host Annual AMA 5K Run -- Proceeds from the 14th annual American Medical Association 5K Run will go to M.E.R.C.Y. Communities.

March 17 - SIU Surgeon Uses New Hip Replacement Technique -- An SIU orthopaedic surgeon is using a new surgical approach for hip replacement.

March 14 - Med School Sponsors Talk -- "Venture Development" is the topic of a presentation jointly sponsored by the Springfield Chamber of Commerce.

March 13 - SIU Med School to Display Enos School Artwork -- Selected artwork by Enos students is displayed at Medical School.

March 12 - CME Program -- The ACCME awarded accreditation for four years for the continuing medical education program at SIU School of Medicine.

March 10 - Healthy Living Program Set -- A six-week healthy living program, sponsored by Department of Internal Medicine, is offered this spring.

March 8 - High School Research Internships Available -- The American Cancer Society is accepting applications for its annual summer high school research internship program.

March 6 - Alumni Director Named -- An SIU faculty member has been named to a new position as director of alumni affairs at SIU School of Medicine.

FEBRUARY 2008
February 27 - Two Receive Honors -- Two medical school faculty receive research honors.

February 26 -Harrisburg Primary Care Receives Award -- Harrisburg Primary Care Group received a "Center of Excellence" award from the Med School.

February 20 - Free Screening Kits Offered -- Area health agencies and health departments along with several local hospitals in central Illinois are offering colorectal screening kits.

February 8 - Zook Endowed Chair -- An SIU plastic surgeon is the recipient of the Elvin G. Zook, M.D. Endowed Chair in Plastic Surgery at SIU School of Medicine. 

February 7 - Med School Holds Job Fair -- Job opportunities for nurses and medical assistants will be discussed at a job fair in March in Springfield.

February 7 - Med School Receives Grant -- A faculty researcher at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield has been awarded four national grants.

February 4 - Quilt Block Challenge Deadline Approaches -- Approximately 125 blocks have been completed and submitted from around central Illinois for the “Pieces of Hope” Quilt Block Challenge benefiting the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU in Springfield. 

JANUARY 2008
January 31 - Med School Sponsors Bone Marrow Drive -- Organized by SIU med students and co-sponsored by the Illinois Department of Public Health, the drive brings awareness of an ongoing need for bone marrow donors.

January 31 - Med School Sponsors Ethnic Heritage Day -- The program includes cultural displays and artifacts as well as a tasting of African-American foods.

January 28 - Play Presented for SIU Cancer Fundraiser -- “Wit,” sponsored by the School of Medicine and the Central Illinois Community Palliative Care Initiative, will be presented as a special fundraiser to benefit the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU. 

January 27 - Hometown Housecall Begins Airing on Public TV -- Hometown Housecall, a program about health and medicine, begins airing on WILL-TV.

January 17 - Med School Conducts Screening -- Volunteers are needed for free venous screenings.

January 17 - Black History Month Activities Set -- A public event will be held at the School to celebrate Black History Month.

January 16 - Two Receive Honors -- Two medical school faculty receive professional honors.

January 14 - SIU Sponsors Eighth Cancer Symposium -- "Your Patient Has Cancer ... Now What?" is the topic for the annual cancer symposium in Springfield.

January 14 - Quilt Block Challenge -- Quilters are invited to participate in a quilt block workshop as part of the "Pieces of Hope" Challenge benefitting the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU.

November 30 - Denim and Diamonds Raises Funds for SimmonsCooper Cancer--The SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University has raised a record amount for its seventh “Denim and Diamonds” fundraising event held in September.

November 27 - Pediatrician Gives Advice For Children's Colds -- SIU pediatrician offers advice for children suffering with the dreaded cough, runny nose and fever.

November 19 - SIU Faculty Physicians Receive Honors -- Twenty-eight faculty physicians were named "Best Doctors."

November 16 - Med School Elects New Alumni Board Members - - Four board members have been named to the School's Alumni Society Board of Governors.

November 14 - St. John's Earns Fetal Lab Accreditation -- St. John's Hospital is the first hospital in the state to earn fetal echocardiography lab accreditation.

November 12 - Med School Receives Grant -- A research scientist at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield has been awarded two grants from the National Cancer Institute, a division of the National Institutes of Health.

November 9 - Educational Forum Set -- Alzheimer's disease is the topic of a public educational forum co-sponsored by SIU's Alzheimer Center and the Alzheimer's Association.

November 9 - Quilt Block Challenge Underway -- Quilters in central Illinois are invited to participate in the "Pieces of Hope" Quilt Block Challenge to benefit the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU.

November 1 - New Imaging Equipment for SIU Med School -- A research scientist at the Med School in Springfield has been awarded a grant from the National Institutes of Health.

October 29 - Employees Honored for Service -- SIU School of Medicine has honored nearly 100 employees in Springfield, Carbondale, Decatur and Quincy for their years of service.

October 29 - SIU Med School Honors Local Health Care Givers -- Three central Illinois health care givers have been honored for their service to patients with dementia by SIU, Alzheimer's Association and the Illinois Department of Aging.

October 26 - Med School Sponsors Diabetes Education Night -- Treating diabetes is the topic of a public education program presented by the endocrinology division at the School of Medicine.

October 12 - Med School Sponsors Talk on Breast Cancer Research -- Breast cancer research is the focus of a lecture series at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

October 12 - Healthy Living Program Set -- A six-week healthy living program, sponsored by Department of Internal Medicine, is offered this fall.

October 12 - Basket Raffle Set -- The third annual “Fantastic Basket” raffle raises funds for the Children’s Miracle Network, which supports St. John’s Children’s Hospital, a partnership of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and St. John’s Hospital.

October 4 - Med School Joins National Research Initiative -- The National Institutes of Health selected St. Louis and Macoupin County, Ill., as sites for the National Children's Study.

October 3 - Med School Makes Speakers Bureau Available -- The Speakers Bureau at the School is providing speakers to community groups for programs about up-to-date medical information.

September 19 - SIU Med Students Complete Research Experiences -- Sophomore medical students from the School of Medicine recently completed their Mentored Professional Enrichment Experiences (MPEE) with formal presentations to the medical school community in September.

September 12 - Med School Receives Grant -- A researcher at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield has been awarded two national grants.

September 11 - Med School Sponsors Patent Law Conference -- Changes and challenges to U.S. patent law will be the topic of a educational conference.

September 5 - Med School Inventions Helping Advance Health Care -- New medical discoveries by research scientists and physicians at SIU School of Medicine are helping improve health care around the globe.

September 4 - SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute Sponsors SIU Men’s Night Out -- Men’s health screenings and information will again be available at the fifth annual men’s health event, “SIU Men’s Night Out,” held in September, with featured guest Gale Sayers of the Chicago Bears.

August 15 - IDPH Designates SJCH for Pediatric Critical Care -- St. John’s Children's Hospital is named one of nine Pediatric Critical Care Centers in Illinois.

August 9 - Med School Recognizes Mentor of the Year -- A family physician from Harrisburg is the Carbondale Mentor of the Year.
