JUNE 2009
June 30 - SIU Organizes Camp COCO 2009 -- The 24th annual Camp COCO will host 130-plus campers with cancer and other blood disorders during its one-week session July 12 through 17. 

June 26 - SIU Surgeon Receives First Sumner Endowed Chair Award -- Dr. Kim Hodgson, professor and chair of the vascular division, has been named recipient of the David S. Sumner, M.D. Endowed Chair in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.

June 24 - Med School Awarded National Honor -- The Department of Family and Community Medicine received a "Top TenAward" from the American Academy of Family Physicians.

June 18 - Two Receive Honors -- Two faculty members from the psychiatry department receive national honors.

June 16 - Med School Receives Grant -- A research scientist at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield has been awarded a grant from the National Institute of Aging, a division of the National Institutes of Health.

June 15 -SIU and Springfield Schools Announce Joint Pilot Program -- A pilot program for high school students will begin to introduce students to the field of medicine.

June 11 - New Providers Join Network --Two providers join the Memory and Aging Network at SIU 's Center for Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders in Springfield.

June 10 - Two Receive Awards -- Two student researchers receive awards from SIU department of pharmacology.

June 10 - SIU Voice Center Offers Voice Care Workshop -- A free workshop for area singers, actors and public speakers.

June 5 - SIU Med School Announces Commencement Awards -- Honors and Awards were announced as part of the 35th commencement held in May in Springfield.

June 5 - SIU Med School Announces Research Symposium Awards -- Eight medical and graduate students and resident physicians received top awards in the 19th annual Trainee Research Symposium at SIU School of Medicine. 

June 1 - SIU Med School Sponsors Talk with Chris Lowery -- Team building is the topic for an Internal Medicine Grand Rounds presentation.

MAY 2009
May 28 - SIU Med School Organizes Golf Scramble -- Annual charity golf scramble benefits the Camp COCO Children’s Cancer Fund at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield.

May 27 - SIU Med School Announces New Members to Honor Society -- Nine new members have been inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical society.

May 22 - SCOPE 2009 is Published -- The sixteenth annual edition of SCOPE, the literary magazine of the School of Medicine, is published.

May 21 - SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute to Hold Fundraiser -- The SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine will hold its inaugural Butterfly Release in the Thomas Garden of Hope at the Institute.

May 18 - Annual Pearson Lecture Set -- The thirteenth annual Emmet F. Pearson Memorial Medical History Lecture at the Med School will be held June 10.

May 18 - Two From SIU Med School Receive Honors -- Two faculty members receive professional honors.

May 8 -- Murphysboro Health Clinic Receives Award -- The Murphysboro Health Clinic received a "Center of Excellence" award from the Med School.

May 7 -- Med School Recognizes Distinguished Alumnus -- A world health expert is the recipient of the medical school's distinguished alumni award for 2009. (photo of Dr. Regina Rabinovich)

May 6 - SIU Med School to Graduate 66 New Physicians -- Commencement for the 35th graduating class of SIU School of Medicine will be held at 2 p.m.. Saturday, May 16.

APRIL 2009
April 16 - Summer Internships Offered by SIU Cancer Institute -- College students planning a career in medicine or research can learn basic lab techniques through a summer internship program at the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU.

April 14 -- Four Receive Honors -- A faculty member and three adminstrators receive professional honors.

April 10 - Med School Offers Free Head and Neck Cancer Screenings -- Free head and neck cancer screenings in the SIU otolaryngology clinic (room 5B) on the fifth floor of St. John's Pavilion, 301 N. 8th Street, Springfield as part of National Oral Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week.

April 9 - Med School Exhibits Art by Sangamon County Students -- More than 100 pieces of artwork created by Sangamon County elementary, middle and high school students is on display in May at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield.

April 8 - Med School Receives Cancer Institute Funding -- Supplemental funding was appropriated to permit the School of Medicine to open the new SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute facility this summer. (SCCI Exterior)

April 1 - Med School Faculty Receives Honor -- A faculty member in pharmacology is named an outstanding scholar.

MARCH 2009
March 30 - Medical Innovators Announced -- The Sangamon County Medical Society and the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce recognize ten physicians and researchers for their medical and scientific breakthroughs. (Medical Innovators Brochure)

March 30 - Med School Sponsors Technology Conference -- Research commercialization is the topic of an educational conference jointly sponsored by the Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce.

March 25 - Med School Sponsors Education Forum -- Parkinson’s disease is the topic of a public educational forum to be held in April.

March 25 - SIU Med Students to Host Annual AMA 5K Run -- Proceeds from the 15th annual American Medical Association 5K Run will go to M.E.R.C.Y. Communities.

March 19 - SIU Seniors and Residency Programs Get Match News -- Senior medical students learned their matches to postgraduate training programs.

March 17 - SIU Med Students Receive Grants - Medical students at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield were received two national grants to support local health fairs as part of their involvement in Cover the Uninsured Week.

March 13 - SIU Telehealth Connects Health Care Activities Statewide -- Health care providers and patients in numerous Illinois communities are now regularly connected thanks to a large video conference effort at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield.

March 13 - SIU Med School to Display Enos School Artwork -- Selected artwork by Enos students is displayed at Medical School.

March 10 -- SIU Part of Medical Home Project for Children -- Two grants will further the development of a patient-centered "medical home" for children with developmental diabilities, mental illnesses and autism disorders.

March 6 - Med School Holds Employment Open House -- Job opportunities for various positions will be discussed at an open house in March in Springfield.

February 25 - Colorectal Screenings Set -- Regional Cancer Partnership of Ilinois is raising awareness of colorectal cancer.

February 17 - Cancer Institute Benefits from ACS Patient Resource Center -- Springfield-area cancer patients and their caregivers will benefit from a new American Cancer Society patient resource center that is part of the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU.

January 28 - Black History Month Activities Set -- Two public events will be held at the School to celebrate Black History Month.

January 28 - Advice on Kids’ Colds and Flu -- SIU pediatrician offers advice for handling kids' colds and flu.

January 27 - SCCI Supports ACS Summer Program for High School Students -- High school juniors from throughout Illinois have the opportunity to work in cancer research laboratories, including those at SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute.

January 22 - Quilts Raise Funds for SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute -- Five quilts were auctioned at the 2008 Denim and Diamonds fundraiser held in Springfield

January 22 - Ethnic Heritage Day Set -- The medical school celebrates the Asian culture with speakers and an ethnic food tasting.

January 21 - Cancer Program Set -- A public education program for people with breast cancer, survivors and their families is being offered this month in Springfield.

January 21 - Healthy Living Program Offered -- A six-week healthy living program, sponsored by Department of Internal Medicine, in partnership with the Springfield Center for Independent Living (SCIL) through a grant from the Illinois Department of Public Health, is offered in February.

January 13 - Med School Opens New Center -- A new fertility and in vitro fertilization center has formally opened at the SIU School of Medicine in Springfield.

December 28 - Two From Med School Receive Honors -- Two faculty members receive national honors.

December 12 - SIU Receives NIH Grant to Study Cancer Treatment -- An SIU physician has been awarded a five-year federal grant from the National Institute of Deafness and Communication Disorders to study cancer treatment.

December 5 - Med School Awarded Accreditation -- The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology received accreditation for three years by the Ultrasound Practice Council of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.

December - Med School Awards Research Funds -- A faculty physician at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield has been awarded research funds to determine whether people who live in rural areas are more likely to have heart disease compared to their urban neighbors. 

December 4 - Med School Receives Grant -- A research scientist at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield has been awarded a five-year federal grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease, a division of the National Institutes of Health.

NOVEMBER 2008
November 24 - Two From SIU Medical School Receive Honors -- Two faculty members receive national honors at Association of American Medical Colleges meeting.

November 18 - Med School Conducting National Research -- National clinical studies as well as medical services are available for Illinois residents from SIU's Center for Alzheimer's Disease.

November 17 - Med School Sponsors Cancer Program -- "Coping with Cancer During the Holidays" is the topic of a public educational event presented by the SimmonsCooper Cancer institute at SIU.

November 14 - SIU medical students elect officers, representatives and committee members from each class --
Class of 2009, Class of 2010, Class of 2011 and Class of 2012.

November 13 - Two From Med School Honors -- Two faculty physicians receive national honors.

November 12 - Med School Receives Grant - A research scientist at SIU School of Medicine received an NIH grant to study prostate cancer.

November 6 - Two From Med School Receive Honors -- Two faculty members receive professional honors.

OCTOBER 2008
October 27 - Med School Sponsors Diabetes Education Night -- Treating diabetes is the topic of a public education program presented by the endocrinology division at the School of Medicine.

October 23 - Employees Honored for Service -- SIU School of Medicine honors 120 employees in Springfield, Carbondale, Decatur and Quincy for their years of service.

October 23 - SIU Faculty Physicians Receive Honors -- Twenty-six faculty physicians were named "Best Doctors."

October 18 - Med School Co-Sponsors Conference -- Alzheimer’s disease is the topic of a conference presented by SIU's Center for Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders, the Illinois Department on Aging and the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Illinois Chapter. 

October 17 - Med School Receives Grants -- Two research scientists at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield each received a national grant to study breast cancer.

October 14 - Med School Makes Speakers Bureau Available -- The Speakers Bureau at the School is providing speakers to community groups for programs about up-to-date medical information.

October 6 - SIUC Plays Role in National Children's Study -- One thousand Southern Illinois children and their families will benefit from enhanced health care thanks to the expansion of a landmark national children's research project into Southern Illinois.

SEPTEMBER 2008
September 29 - Med School Receives Grants -- A research scientist at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield has received three federal grants for cancer research.

September 24 - Med School Sponsors Technology Conference -- Research commercialization and technology transfer are the topics of an educational conference for health care innovators, research professionals and financial investors.

September 24 - Med School Receives Grant -- A research scientist at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield has been awarded a grant from the National Cancer Institute, a division of the National Institutes of Health, to study colon cancer.

September 23 - SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute Holds Denim and Diamonds Fundraiser -- The SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University is hosting its eighth “Denim and Diamonds” fundraiser on Saturday, October 18. 

September 18 - American Cancer Society's Celebration of Life -- The SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU has recruited new research faculty to increase the amount of local cancer research. 

September 10 - SIU Med Students Complete Research Experiences -- Sophomore medical students from the School of Medicine recently completed their Mentored Professional Enrichment Experiences (MPEE) with formal presentations to the medical school community.

September 8 - Area Health Agencies and Hospitals to Provide Free Mammograms -- As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, a group of area health agencies and local hospitals are offering free mammograms in central Illinois.

September 4 - SIU Pediatrician Reminds Parents About Immunizations -- Dr. Craig Batterman reminds parents that vaccinating your child is one way to ensure their health.

September 3 - Ethnic Heritage Day Set -- The medical school celebrates the Hispanic and Latino cultures with speakers and an ethnic food tasting.

September 2 - SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute Sponsors SIU Men’s Night Out -- Men’s health screenings and information will again be available at the sixth annual men’s health event, “SIU Men’s Night Out,” held in September, with featured guest Lou Brock of the St. Louis Cardinals.

August 27 - Med School Receives Grants -- Two researchers at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield have been awarded national grants to study breast cancer. 

August 27 - Med School Recognizes Mentor of the Year -- A gynecologist from Carbondale is the Carbondale Mentor of the Year.

August 25 - Med School Receives Grant -- A research scientist at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield has been awarded a grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a division of the National Institutes of Health.

August 21 - Two from Med School Receive Honors -- Two faculty members receive professional honors.

August 20 - Med School Receives Grants -- A physician and a researcher at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield have been awarded grants from the William E. McElroy Charitable Foundation for cancer research.

August 12 - Med School First Year Students Participate in Ceremony -- Medical students in the class of 2012 start their medical training in Carbondale and receive symbolic White Coat.

August 7 - SIU Pediatric Cardiologist Sees Patients in Quincy -- Dr.Tankut Önal, a specialist in pediatric cardiology, is now seeing patients on the second Tuesday of each month at Blessing Hospital, 11th and Broadway, Quincy.

August 6 - SIU Hosts American Cancer Society Research Intern -- A student from Glenwood High School participated in ACS intern program.

August 1 - SIU Surgeon Uses New Surgical Device -- An SIU vascular surgeon is using a new medical device to treat abdominal aortic aneurysms.

August 1 - Ethnic Heritage Day Set -- The medical school celebrates the culture of India with speakers and an ethnic food tasting.

JULY 2008
July 31 - Thomas Healing Garden Dedicated at SIU School of Medicine -- The Gordon R. Thomas and Evelyn Brandt Thomas Garden of Hope has been dedicated at the SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute at SIU in Springfield.

July 24 - SIU Physicians Reach Out to Community Blood Donors -- Blood usage by the Central Illinois Community Blood Center has increased ten percent since last year.

July 23 - Two From Med School Receive Honors -- An employee and a faculty researcher receive national honors.

July 10 - Med School Holds SimmonsCooper Cancer Institute Celebration -- Medical school and University officials led the ribbon-cutting celebration in Springfield for the Simmons-Cooper Cancer Institute at SIU.
