June 29 - Camp COCO Set for July -- The 26th annual Camp COCO will host 140 campers with cancer and other blood disorders during its one-week session July 10 through 15.

June 23 - Employee of the Year Awarded -- The Civil Service Employee of the Year for Carbondale was given.

June 21 - SCI Program Addresses Nutrition -- A program designed to assist cancer patients with healthy eating at home and away.

June 20 - Community Support Network Art Exhibit Set -- Artwork created by members of the Community Support Network will be displayed.

June 15 - Internships Begin at Cancer Institute -- Area students participate in Simmons Cancer Institute intern program.

June 15 - Pharmacology Awards Announced -- Four researchers receive awards from SIU department of pharmacology.

June 14 - Scarf Tying Class Set for Cancer Patients -- A class for women dealing with hair loss to learn how to tie a headscarf.

June 14 - Humanism, Teaching Awards Announced -- Honors and Awards were announced as part of the 37th commencement held in Springfield.

June 10 - Program Stresses Cancer Communcations -- A communication skills program for cancer patients, their families and caregivers will be offered at Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

June 9 - Faculty Promotions Announced -- Academic promotions have been awarded to 13 faculty members at SIU School of Medicine.

June 8 - Med Students Honor Carbondale Mentor -- A family medicine physician in Vienna is the Carbondale Mentor of the Year.

June 6 - Cancer Institute to Hold Butterfly Release -- The Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine will hold its second Butterfly Release in the Thomas Garden of Hope at the Institute.

June 2 - COCO Golf Scramble Set -- Four-person teams are being formed for the annual charity golf scramble in June benefiting the Camp COCO Children’s Cancer Fund at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

MAY 2011
May 26 - Grad Students Earn Research Awards -- Twelve graduate student have received top awards in the 21st Annual Trainee Research Symposium at SIU School of Medicine.

May 25 - Students, Residents Receive Research Awards -- Three medical students and six resident physicians have received top awards in the 21st annual Trainee Research Symposium at SIU School of Medicine. 

May 24 - SCOPE Magazine Published -- The eighteenth annual edition of SCOPE, the literary magazine of the School of Medicine, is published.

May 19 - Alzheimer's Disease Forum Set -- Healthy brain aging is the topic of a public educational forum to be presented in June by the Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders at SIU. 

May 18 - Cancer Program Addresses Treatment Side Effects -- Good nutrition and its role in helping patients cope with nausea and other side effects during treatment will be addressed during a free event in June in Springfield.

May 17 - Colon Screenings Available in Mason County -- The Vince Demuzio Colorectal Cancer Screening Initiative is working with Mason District Hospital to provide free screenings for colon cancer.

May 13 - Federal Grants Support Cancer Research -- Two research scientists at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield have been awarded grants by the Department of Defense U.S. Army Medical Research to study prostate cancer. 

May 12 - Breast Cancer Survivors Being Recruited -- Women who have had breast cancer are being recruited by SIU School of Medicine for a study to determine the effectiveness of an exercise program designed to help breast cancer patients.  

May 11 - "Cancer Diagnosis" Class Announced -- "Cancer Diagnosis?  What's Next?" is a new class at Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU for cancer patients and their loved ones who have just received a cancer diagnosis.

May 11 - Decatur Family Medicine Honored -- SIU Family Physicians in Decatur has received Level One Recognition as a Patient Centered Medical Home from the National Committee for Quality Assurance.

May 10 - Commencement Set for May 21 -- Commencement for the 37th graduating class of SIU School of Medicine will be held at noon Saturday, May 21.

May 10 - Colon Screenings Available in Macoupin County -- The Vince Demuzio Colorectal Cancer Screening Initiative is working with Carlinville Area Hospital to provide free screenings for colon cancer. 

May 6 - National Honor Society Members Named -- Fourteen new members have been inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield. 

May 4 - Employee/Supervisor of the Year Awarded -- The Supervisor of the Year and Employee of the Year were given this spring.

May 4 -- Faculty Physicians Named "Best Doctors" -- Twenty-six faculty physicians at SIU School of Medicine are included in Best Doctors® in America 2011-12 database.

May 3 - Car Seat Inspections Offered -- A free car seat inspection and health fair event, “Spring into Safety,” is being sponsored by SIU School of Medicine. 

May 3 - Colon Screenings Available in Montgomery County -- The Vince Demuzio Colorectal Cancer Screening Initiative is working with Hillsboro Area Hospital to provide free screenings for colon cancer. 

May 2 - ThinkFirst Chatham Program Set -- ThinkFirst, an injury prevention program offered by SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, will assist in presenting a mock crash reenactment to students in Chatham.

APRIL 2011
April 28 - Two Receive National Honors -- An administrator in psychiatry and an internal medicine resident receive professional honors.

April 27 - Colon Screenings Available in Logan County -- The Vince Demuzio Colorectal Cancer Screening Initiative is working with Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln to provide free screenings for colon cancer. 

April 27 - ThinkFirst Program Taylorville Scheduled -- ThinkFirst, an injury prevention program offered by SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, will assist in presenting a mock crash reenactment to students in Taylorville.

April 26 - ThinkFirst Pana Program Set -- ThinkFirst, an injury prevention program offered by SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, will assist in presenting a mock crash reenactment to students in Pana.

April 22 - Trio to Perform at Cancer Institute --  “Three’s Company,” a female trio who sings music in the style of the Andrews Sisters, will perform in the lobby of Simmons Cancer Institute in Springfield.

April 21 - Quincy FCM Recieves Quality Award -- The Quincy Family Practice Center has received the Group Quality Award from SIU School of Medicine. 

April 21 - Two Surgery Faculty Honored -- Two faculty members from surgery receive professional honors.

April 20 - Parents Offered Advice on Tonsilitis -- Nearly every child between the ages of five and fifteen experiences tonsillitis at least once.

April 19 - Primary Care Conference Set for Carterville --"Updates in Primary Care" is the topic of a medical education conference in May for primary care physicians and other allied health professionals.

April 19 - RCPIL Announces Skin Screenings -- May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and the Regional Cancer Partnership of Illinois is taking appointments for free skin cancer screenings from 4 - 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 3.

April 18 - Course to Help Patients Transition to 'Survivor' -- Cancer patients who have completed active anti-cancer treatment within the past two years are invited to a new six-week course, “Cancer Transitions: Moving Beyond Treatment™.”

April 15 - Sangamon Students Exhibit Art -- Ninety pieces of artwork created by Sangamon County elementary, middle and high school students is on display in May at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield.

April 12 - HealthCare Names Medical Officer -- Dr. Jeffrey G. Lobas has been named chief medical officer for SIU HealthCare and professor of pediatric pulmonology.

April 12 - ThinkFirst PORTA Program Set -- ThinkFirst, an injury prevention program offered by SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, will assist in presenting a mock crash reenactment to PORTA students.

April 11 - Med Student Awarded NIH Fellowship -- A third-year medical student has been awarded a fellowship in the Clinical Research Training Program at the National Institutes of Health.

April 8 - SCOPE Readings, Exhibits Set -- The eighteenth annual edition of SCOPE, the literary magazine of the School of Medicine, will be published in April.

April 7 - Med Students Host 5K Run -- Proceeds from the 17th annual American Medical Association 5K Run will go to M.E.R.C.Y. Communities.

April 7 - Cultural Awareness Training Scheduled -- A free half-day medical training program about cultural awareness for nurses and other health care providers.

April 5 - ThinkFirst Program Set -- ThinkFirst, an injury prevention program offered by SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, will assist in presenting a mock crash reenactment to Franklin and Waverly students.

April 5 - SIU HealthCare CEO Named -- Dr. Hyung T. Kim has been named associate dean for clinical affairs for SIU School of Medicine and chief executive officer of SIU HealthCare. 

April 4 - Head/Neck Cancer Program, Screenings Set -- Free head and neck cancer screenings at Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at SIU School of Medicine, 315 W. Carpenter Street, Springfield as part of National Oral Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week.

MARCH 2011
March 30 - Italian Culture Featured for Ethnic Heritage -- An Ethnic Heritage Day celebration featuring Italian culture will be held at SIU School of Medicine. 

March 30 - Cancer Screenings Available Through Passavant -- The Vince Demuzio Colorectal Cancer Screening Initiative is working with Passavant Area Hospital in Jacksonville to provide free screenings for colon cancer. 

March 29 - Head and Neck Cancer Grant Awarded -- A physician at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield has been awarded a national grant from the American Institute for Cancer Research to test a program designed to prevent loss of muscle mass during treatment for head and neck cancer. 

March 29 - High School Jazz Singers to Perform at SCI -- Springfield High School’s “The Seven and Senators” will perform in the lobby of Simmons Cancer Institute. 

March 25 - Med Student Awarded ACP Internship -- A medical student at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield has been awarded a national internship from the American College of Physicians (ACP) for 2011. 

March 24 - Health Care Law Talk Scheduled -- Disability, disparities and health care reform are the topics of a presentation for medical and legal professionals this month sponsored by SIU School of Law. 

March 17 - SIU Seniors and Residency Programs Get Match News -- Senior medical students learned their matches to postgraduate training programs.

March 14 - Parkinson Forum Set -- Parkinson disease is the topic of a public educational forum to be presented in April by the Center for Parkinson Disease at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. 

March 7 - Triathlon Program Set -- The sports medicine providers at SIU School of Medicine are hosting a public event to help local athletes prepare for the summer triathlon season. 

March 4 - Speaker for Power Lunch Against Cancer Set -- Author Jackie Pflug is the keynote speaker at the second annual Women’s Power Lunch Against Cancer.

March 3 - RCPIL Sets Colorectal Screening -- Colorectal cancer screening kits will be available in March in Springfield.

March 1 - Enos Artwork to be Displayed -- Selected artwork by Enos students is displayed at Medical School.

February 28 - Alumni Board Members Elected -- Five new board members were named to the Alumni Society Board of Governors at SIU School of Medicine. 

February 22 - Mind-Body Course Offered for Cancer Patients -- A free six-week mind-body skills course is being offered in Springfield by Simmons Cancer Institute and St. John’s Hospital.

February 20 - Medical Research Funding At Risk --Thousands of medical research jobs and millions of dollars in economic activity are at risk as the result of proposed federal spending cuts.

February 18 - Funds Awarded for Heart Research -- A fund established by the late Bernie Eskridge, a lifelong resident of Springfield, has awarded its second grant for heart research.

February 11 - Open House for Clinical Jobs Set -- Opportunities for clinical jobs will be highlighted at an employment open house sponsored by SIU School of Medicine in Springfield. 

February 4 --Black History Month Activities Set -- Five public events and three movie screenings will be held at the School to celebrate Black History Month.

February 1 - Inclement Weather -- Due to extreme weather conditions, SIU School of Medicine is closing its operations for all facilities in Springfield, Quincy and Decatur on Wednesday, February 2, 2011.

February 1 - SCI Offers Genetics and Cancer Event -- Cancer patients, their families and caregivers will be able to explore genetics and cancer at a public event.

January 26 - Two From SIU Receive Professional Honors -- A faculty member from Medical Humanities and one from SIU HealthCare receive professional honors.

January 19 - Three Federal Grants Support Cancer Research -- Two research scientists at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield have received three grants by the Department of Defense U.S. Army Medical Research to study breast and prostate cancer. 

January 18 - Carbondale Family Practice Receives Award -- SIU Carbondale Family Practice Center has received an Award for Excellence from the Your Healthcare Plus program for providing quality medical care in diabetes. 

January 13 - Summer Internships Offered by Cancer Institute --SCI is accepting applications for its summer lab internship program.

January 5 - Alumni Scholarships Awarded -- Four fourth-year medical students have received an Alumni Scholarship award.

January 4 - Quincy Family Practice Receives Awards -- SIU Quincy Family Practice Center has received two Awards for Excellence from the Your Healthcare Plus program for providing quality medical care in both diabetes and coronary artery disease. 

DECEMBER 2010
December 21 - Borkon Scholarship Awarded -- A first-year medical student, has received a monetary award from the Dr. Eli and Claire Borkon Scholarship at SIU School of Medicine. 

December 20 - ACS Grant Funds Virus in Cancer Research -- A research scientist at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield has received a one-year grant from the American Cancer Society, Illinois Division, for the study of the Epstein-Barr virus and its possible link to cancer development. 

December 16 - Templeton Scholarship Awarded -- A first-year medical student has received a monetary award from the J.S. Templeton, M.D., Memorial Scholarship at SIU School of Medicine. 

December 15 - Alzheimer's Center Advances Treatment -- Physicians, researchers and other health care professionals at the Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield are treating patients while working to find a cure for the disease.

December 10 - Hertweck Scholarship Awarded -- A first-year medical student has received a monetary award from the Virginia J. Hertweck Memorial Endowment Scholarship at SIU School of Medicine. 

December 6 - New Cancer Support Group Begins -- A new support group for individuals who are caregivers for or loved ones of cancer patients has been started at Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU. 

December 1 - New Surgery Residency Offered -- SIU School of Medicine will offer a five-year residency training program in vascular surgery for new physicians.

December 1 - Colon Cancer Screenings Expand -- The Vince Demuzio Colorectal Cancer Screening Initiative will provide free screenings for colon cancer patients in a total of 17 counties in central Illinois.

November 30 - Burkhart Scholarship Awarded -- A third-year medical student has received a scholarship award at SIU School of Medicine.

November 19 - Class Officers Elected -- SIU medical students elect officers, representatives and committee members from each class.

November 12 - Sexual Health Seminar Set - Diabetic men experiencing erectile dysfunction are encourage to ask their doctor about being screened for cardiovascular disease during November, American Diabetes Month.

November 10 - Physicians Receive National Honors -- Two faculty members from surgery have receive professional honors.

November 9 - Respiratory Problems Studied in Trial -- Men and women who have respiratory symptoms or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are being recruited for a clinical trial at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield.

November 8 - Employees Honored for Service -- SIU School of Medicine honors 60 employees in Springfield, Carbondale, Decatur and Quincy for their years of service.

November 4 - Colon Cancer Project Begins -- The Vince Demuzio Colorectal Cancer Screening Initiative will provide free screenings for colon cancer in Menard and Sangamon counties.

November 1 - Memory Loss Conference Set -- SIU's Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders in Springfield is sponsoring a memory loss conference for person's with Alzheimer's disease, their families and caregivers.

October 29 - Prenatal Care Program to Start -- Centering Pregnancy is a prenatal care program starting at the Center for Family Medicine at SIU School of Medicine. 

October 29 - Two Faculty Receive Professional Honors - A faculty member from medicine/psychiatry and one from hematology/oncology have been elected members of national associations.

October 27 - Dunnington to Receive AAMC Teaching Award -- Dunnington will receive this award for his outstanding contributions to academic medicine and the global community at the annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

October 25 - Two Receive Professional Honors -- Two faculty members from surgery receive national honors.

October 22 - Exercise in Breast Cancer Survivors Being Studied -- A physician at SIU School of Medicine has received fund from the National Cancer Institute to determine the benefits of exercise and breast cancer.

October 19 - Diabetes Education Program Set -- Treating diabetes is the topic of a public education program presented by the endocrinology division at the School of Medicine.

Octrober 14 - SIU Researchers Studying Breast Cancer -- The research by scientists at the Simmons Cancer Institute in Springfield includes more than $5 million for breast cancer projects.

October 13 - Employment Open House Set -- Job opportunities for civil service positions will be discussed at an open house at SIU School of Medicine.

October 6 - Four Grants Awarded to Study Cancer Therapies -- A researcher at SIU School of Medicine has been awarded four federal grants.

October 4 - Landecker Scholarship Awarded -- A first-year medical student has received a scholarship award at SIU School of Medicine.

September 23 - Free Hearing Screenings Offered -- SIU audiologists are offering free hearing screenings in October.

September 21 - Research Grant Awarded for Hearing Loss -- A researcher at SIU School of Medicine has been awarded a federal research grant.

September 20 - Litchfield Family Practitioner Receives National Award -- A Litchfield physician has received a national teacher development award.

September 17 - African-American Med Students Begin Training -- Nine African-American students in the Class of 2014 started their training in August at SIU School of Medicine. 

September 16 - McAfee Scholarship Awarded -- A second-year medical student has received a scholarship award at SIU School of Medicine.

September 8 - SIH and SIU Cancer Institutes Announce Affiliation -- A new affiliation that will enhance specialized cancer treatment for patients in southern Illinois has been announced by Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) Cancer Institute and Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at SIU School of Medicine. 

September 1 - Dell'Era, Lawrence Scholarships Awarded -- Three medical students have received scholarship awards at SIU School of Medicine.

AUGUST 2010
August 31 - NIH Grant Will Study Breast Cancer Metastasis -- A research scientist at SIU School of Medicine in Springfield has been awarded a five-year grant from the National Cancer Institute to study ways to prevent or reduce metastasis in breast cancer. 

August 25 - SCI Offers Exercise, Yoga Classes -- Simmons Cancer Institute offers free exercise and yoga classes for individuals who have or have had cancer.

August 18 - SCI Starts Women's Group -- Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) has started a new support group for women who are being treated for cancer or who are cancer survivors.

August 17 - Med School Researcher Proposes Vaccine Against Herpes -- An SIU research scientist has his research findings published by the Public Library of Science (PLoS) in their journal PLoS ONE.

August 10 - Three Equipment Grants Advance Research -- Two research scientists at SIU in Springfield have been awarded three shared equipment grants from the National Center for Research Resources, a division of the National Institutes of Health.

August 10 - New Students Receive White Coats -- Medical students in the class of 2014 start their medical training in Carbondale and receive symbolic White Coat.

August 9 - Templeton Scholarship Awarded -- A second-year medical student has received the J.S. Templeton, M.D., Memorial Scholarship at SIU School of Medicine.

JULY 2010
July 29 - Med Students Complete Research Electives -- Medical students from the School of Medicine recently completed their Mentored Professional Enrichment Experiences (MPEE).

July 28 - Annual Pearson Lecture Set -- The fifteenth annual Emmet F. Pearson Memorial Medical History Lecture at the Med School will be held August 19.

July 22 - Cancer Research Internship Is Underway -- Area student participated in ACS intern program.
