December

December 12 - SIU Med School Announces Hull Scholarship -- Dax Volle, a first-year medical student, has received a monetary award from the Hull Scholarship at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

December 7 - SIU Medical School Names Student Class Officers -- Medical students at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield and Carbondale have been elected to leadership positions as officers, representatives and committee members for the 2012-13 school year.  

December 5 - Hope Springs Apartments Provides Better Living for Disabled -- Patients with mental illness who are clients of SIU School of Medicine’s Community Support Network now have better living opportunities at Hope Springs Apartments in Springfield.

December 4 - SIU HealthCare to Open OB/GYN Clinic in Taylorville -- Women living in the Taylorville area will soon have the option of receiving gynecological and prenatal care in their hometown.

November 30 - Simmons Cancer Institute Offers Innovative Treatment for Aggressive Brain Tumors -- An innovative treatment for a type of highly aggressive brain tumors called glioblastoma is available at the Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.

November 28 - SIU Med Students Receive Scholarships -- Two fourth-year medical students from SIU School of Medicine have received scholarships from the Southern Illinois Medical Association.

November 21 - SIU School of Medicine Receives Grant for Cardiovascular Research -- Southern Illinois University School of Medicine received $142,469 from the American Heart Association to conduct a cardiovascular research study.

November 21 - SIU Med School Names Chairman of Neurology -- James M. Gilchrist, M.D., has joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as professor and chair of the Department of Neurology.

November 20 - SIU Med School Announces Scholarship Awards -- Five medical students have received Alumni Scholarship awards at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. 

November 14 -SIU School of Medicine Carbondale Employees Service Awards -- The School of Medicine recently honored 12 of its employees for their years of service at campus facilities in Carbondale.

November 9 - SIU School of Medicine Employees Honored for Service -- The School of Medicine honored 60 of its employees for their years of service at campus facilities in Springfield, Decatur and Quincy.

November 8 - SIU Med School Announces Kathryn Terry Scholarships -- Five medical students have received monetary awards from the Kathryn Terry Scholarship at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.  The scholarship is given annually to third- and/or fourth-year medical students.

November 7 - Students Named to SIU Med School-Springfield Schools Program -- Ten ninth-grade students in Springfield have been selected for a program to encourage local high school students interested in becoming physicians.

November 7 - SIU Med School Sponsors Ethnic Heritage Day for Scottish Culture -- An Ethnic Heritage Day celebration featuring Scottish cultures will be held Wednesday, November 14 at SIU School of Medicine.

November 6 - SIU Hearing Loss Researcher Named Inventor of the Year -- A faculty researcher at SIU School of Medicine, Kathleen Campbell, Ph.D., has received the Inventor of the Year Award from Southern Illinois University for her work with agents that can protect against noise- and drug-induced hearing loss and other side effects of cancer therapies.

November 6 - SIU Med School Sponsors “ThinkFirst” Poinsettia Fundraiser -- 'ThinkFirst,' an injury prevention program offered by Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, is offering its tenth annual poinsettia fundraiser.

October 31 - SIU Med School Announces Dell’Era Scholarship Awards -- Three medical students have received scholarship awards at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

October 30 - SIU Med School Receives Federal Grant to Study Obstetrical Complications -- A faculty researcher at SIU School of Medicine has been awarded a three-year federal grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to study preeclampsia and intrauterine growth retardation, which are complications of pregnancy.

October 23 - SIU Med School Announces Borkon Scholarship -- Scott Geiger, a first-year medical student, has received a monetary award from the Dr. Eli and Claire Borkon Scholarship at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

October 16 - BRA Day USA (video) -- To raise awareness of breast cancer and reconstructive surgery options for its survivors, SIU School of Medicine employees, family, friends and cancer survivors created a human pink ribbon on October 5.

October 15 - SIU Med School Announces Templeton Scholarship -- Maddelynn Hawkins, a first-year medical student, has received a monetary award from the J.S. Templeton, M.D., Memorial Scholarship at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The award is given annually to an SIU medical student from Perry County.

October 15 - SIU Med School Co-Sponsors Memory Loss Conference -- Memory loss is the topic of a conference for family and caregivers to be presented by the Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders in Springfield. 

October 10 - SIU Med Students Working with Local Physicians -- Family physicians in eight Illinois communities are hosting students from SIU School of Medicine October 5 – November 2 in the School’s Family Medicine Preceptorship Program.

October 10 - SIU Med School Announces Hertweck and Landecker Scholarships -- Stephanie LeMaster has received two monetary awards from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine – the Hertweck Scholarship and Landecker Memorial Award.

October 5 - SIU Med School Announces Kurt Heisler Scholarship Award -- Jonathan Balagna, a fourth-year student from Forsyth, has been awarded the 2012 Kurt Heisler, M.D., Scholarship at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. 

October 5 - SIU School of Medicine Holds Primary Care Month Activities -- Primary care month is being celebrated with several public events at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield from Monday, October 8, to Friday, October 29.

October 2 - SIU School of Medicine Holds Diversity Week Events -- Diversity Week is being celebrated with several public activities and a national speaker at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield from Monday, October 22 to Friday, October 26.

October 1 - Mind Body Skill Class Open to Cancer Patients -- A free, six-week class designed to help cancer patients and survivors understand the mind-body connection as they go through treatment or enter survivorship is being offered by Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

October 1 - Cardinal’s Manager to Headline Simmons Cancer Institute’s “SIU Men’s Night Out” -- Men’s health screenings and information will be the focus of the eighth men’s health event, “SIU Men’s Night Out,” featuring World Champion St. Louis Cardinal’s manager Mike Matheny.

September 27 - SIU Med School Announces Burkhart Scholarship -- Andrea Ulysse, a second-year medical student, has received a monetary award from the Kate Burkhart Medical Scholarship Endowment at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. 

September 21 - SIU Med School Receives Federal Grant to Study Hearing Protection -- A physician at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield has been awarded a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study mechanisms of cochlear oxidative stress injury and strategies to protect hearing. The total budget for the grant is $1.2 million.

September 20 - SIU Cancer Institute to Offer “Mammogram Mondays” for Uninsured Women -- Women who do not have health insurance will have the opportunity to receive a free screening mammogram from 4 - 7 p.m. on Mondays in October at the Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine.

September 18 - Med Students Hold Fundraisers for Mission Trips -- Medical students at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine have organized three fundraising events this fall in collaboration with Springfield restaurants and shops. 

September 14 - Minority Students Begin Studies at SIU School of Medicine -- Ten minority students in the Class of 2016 started their training in August at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

September 14 - Drumming for Health Class Open to Cancer Patients -- Registration is open for Drumming for Health, a free, six-week class for cancer patients at Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine.

September 12 - SIU Med School Sponsors Hispanic-Latino Ethnic Heritage Day -- An Ethnic Heritage Day celebration featuring Hispanic and Latino cultures will be held Tuesday, September 18 at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

September 10 - Women’s Group Provides Support for Cancer Patients, Survivors -- Women Around You (WAY), a women’s support group for cancer patients and survivors, will meet the fourth Wednesday of each month from 5:30-6:30 p.m. starting Wednesday, Sept. 26 at Simmons Cancer Institute (SCI) at SIU School of Medicine.

September 6 - SIU Med School Offers Dual Degree in Medicine, Public Health --Two freshman students are participating in a new dual-degree program in medicine and public health at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

September 5 - SIU Med School Part of National Alzheimer’s Disease Study -- Individuals who are diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease are needed to participate in a national multi-site study of the drug Gammagard at SIU School of Medicine.

Sept. 5 - “Denim & Diamonds” Cancer Institute Event Supports Research and Patient Comforts -- Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine is hosting its 12th annual “Denim & Diamonds” fundraiser Saturday, October 20th.

August 29 - SIU Med School Sponsors Annual Pearson Medical History Lecture -- Southern Illinois University School of Medicine will host a dramatic presentation of “The Yellow Wallpaper” for the 17th annual Emmet F. Pearson Memorial Medical History Lecture.

August 24 - Mocharnuk Named Director of Breast Center at SIU -- Robert Mocharnuk, M.D., has been named the director of The Breast Center at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

August 17 - SIU HealthCare Presents ‘Baby Day’ with ABC NewsChannel 20 -- New and expecting parents and child-care providers are invited to the “2012 Baby Day,” sponsored by SIU HealthCare and ABC NewsChannel 20.

August 13 - Healthy Eating Classes to Start -- The Eating for Health! series will again be offered to cancer patients and the general public through a partnership of Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU and the Lincoln Land Community College Culinary Institute.

August 9 - SIU Med School Receives Federal Grant for Treatment of Noise-Induced Hearing Loss -- A research scientist and inventor at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has been awarded a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense for a study to determine optimal dosages and timing of dosages of D-methionine for protection and rescue from noise-induced hearing loss. 

August 2 - New SIU Medical Students Begin Training -- Medical students in the Class of 2016 at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine start their medical training this week in Carbondale.

August 1 - Healthy Eating Classes Offered at SIU Med School -- Healthy eating classes will be offered this fall by the Division of Endocrinology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

July 27 - SIU Med School Sponsors India Ethnic Heritage Day -- An Ethnic Heritage Day celebration featuring the culture of India will be held Wednesday, August 15, at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. 

July 25 - Clinical Trial Attempts to Improve Surgery for Malignant Brain Tumors -- Neurosurgeons are using an experimental drug to identify malignant brain tumor tissue in a clinical trial at SIU School of Medicine’s Division of Neurosurgery and the Center for Clinical Research.

July 18 - SIU Med School Pediatrician to Study Biology of Kidney Transplants -- An SIU School of Medicine pediatrician will research the leading cause of long-term failure of kidney transplants in children through a collaborative program between SIU and Washington University in St. Louis.

July 17 - SIU Med Students Work With Researchers During Summer Program -- Thirteen medical students are getting a look at life inside a research laboratory during a summer research program at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

July 16 - Colorectal Cancer Test Kits Available -- The Regional Cancer Partnership of Illinois will provide free colorectal cancer home screening kits on selected dates in August at two Springfield locations.

July 5 - Children with Cancer Attend SIU Med School’s Annual Camp COCO -- The 27th annual Camp COCO will host 144 campers with cancer and other blood disorders during its one-week session July 8 through 13.

July 3 - SIU Med School Names Chairman of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology -- Donald Torry, Ph.D., has been named chairman of the Department of Medical Microbiology, Immunology and Cell Biology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

June 28 - SIU Med Students Honor Alumnus as Mentor of the Year -- Family medicine physician Dr. Larry Jones was chosen as Mentor of the Year by first-year medical students at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

June 27 - College Students Learn from Cancer Researchers Through SIU Internship Program -- Four college students have started work in the labs of cancer researchers this summer at Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine.

June 19 - Federal Grant Supports Tinnitus Research - A group of research scientists at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield have been awarded a three-year federal grant to study a specific brain chemical and its receptor that could provide a new drug target for the treatment of tinnitus, also known as ringing in the ears.

June 14 - SIU School of Medicine Faculty Promoted -- Academic promotions have been awarded to thirteen faculty members at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

June 7 - Faculty and Student Receive Humanism, Teaching Awards -- Several honors have been announced this spring at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.

May 31 - SIU to Offer Free Varicose Vein Screening -- Vascular surgeons from SIU School of Medicine will provide free varicose vein screening from 5-7 p.m., Monday, June 18, at the SIU Surgical Clinics Building, 421 N. 9th St, Springfield.

May 31 - CDC Immunization Director Named Distinguished Alum -- Dr. Lance Rodewald received the Distinguished Alumni Award for 2012 from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

May 25 - Butterfly Release Set for June 16 at Simmons Cancer Institute -- The fourth annual Butterfly Release will be celebrated at Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SCI) at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 16 in Springfield.

May 25 - Carbondale Family Medicine Names New Director -- Dr. Quincy Scott has been named director of the Southern Illinois University Family Medicine in Carbondale.

May 23 - SIU Med School Announces Three Research Awards -- Three research awards have been announced by the Department of Pharmacology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.

May 23 - SIU Physician Named Distinguished Educator  -- Dr. David Rogers, professor of pediatric surgery at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, received the 2012 Distinguished Educator Award from the Association for Surgical Education (ASE) at its annual meeting in San Diego this spring.

May 21 - SIU Med School to Hold Golf Scramble for Camp COCO -- Teams are being formed for the annual charity golf scramble in June benefiting the Camp COCO Children’s Cancer Fund at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

May 17 - SIU Med School Sponsors Alzheimer’s Disease Educational Forum -- Healthy brain aging is the topic of a public educational forum to be presented by the Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine on May 30.

May 10 - Commencement set for May 19 --Commencement exercises for the 38th graduating class of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine will be held at noon Saturday, May 19. The ceremony will be in the Sangamon Auditorium at the University of Illinois Springfield.

May 8 - SIU Med School Graduate Students Awarded for Research -- Twelve graduate students have received top awards in the 22nd annual Trainee Research Symposium at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

May 7 - Global Health Care Reform Ideas to Be Presented at SIU -- Nationally recognized leaders in health care will be the keynote speakers for the 29th annual E. March 28 - SIU Family Medicine Receives Recognition as Patient Centered Medical Home -- SIU HealthCare's Springfield Center for Family Medicine has received recognition as a Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) from the National Committee for Quality Assurance, a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health-care quality.

March 28 - SIU Family Medicine Professor Elected President of National Society -- Dr. Jerry Kruse, professor and chair of the Department of Family & Community Medicine at the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, has been elected president of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) for 2012-13.

March 26 - SIU Med Students to Host Annual AMA 5K Race -- The Junaia P. Carter M.D. 5K Race, organized by medical students at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at Washington Park in Springfield.

March 23 - SIU Med School to Hold Employment Open House -- Opportunities for clinical jobs will be highlighted at an employment open house from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, sponsored by Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield.

March 16 - SIU Med School Seniors and Residency Programs Get Match News -- Senior medical students in the graduating Class of 2012 at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine were given results from the National Resident Matching Program on Friday, March 16, at the same time other U.S. medical students learned their matches to postgraduate training programs. Sixty-six SIU seniors have secured residency positions.

March 1 - Patients with Raynaud’s Syndrome Sought for SIU Clinical Trial -- Patients suffering with finger pain caused by Raynaud’s Syndrome are needed to participate in a clinical trial at SIU School of Medicine’s Division of Plastic Surgery.

February 23 - Hand and Foot Massages Available to Cancer Patients at SCI -- Hand and foot massage, tailored to cancer patients, is now available at Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine. The service is free to cancer patients.

February 22 - SIU Quincy Family Medicine Receives National Recognition as Patient Centered Medical Home -- SIU HealthCare’s Quincy Family Medicine has received recognition as a Patient Centered Medical Home from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), a private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving health-care quality.

February 21 - Drumming for Health Classes Offered for Cancer Patients -- Cancer patients are invited to register for “Drumming for Health,” a free, four-week class that will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, March 10, 17, 24 and 31 at Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU School of Medicine, 315 W. Carpenter St. in Springfield.

February 13 - SCI Sets Meditation Classes -- Registration is open for a three-week series of meditation workshops at Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.

February 7 - Collaboration to Study Disparities in Lung Cancer Treatments in Southern Illinois -- SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, Southern Illinois Healthcare (SIH) Cancer Institute in Carbondale and the Illinois State Cancer Registry will collaborate on a two-year study that will explore disparities in the treatment of lung cancer in southern Illinois.
