SIU Med Physician Assistant Named President-Elect of IAPA

Don Diemer, program director of the physician assistant program at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Carbondale, has been elected to the position of president-elect of the Illinois Academy of Physician Assistants (IAPA). His term began in January 2013 and will be followed by a term as president in 2014.

The IAPA was established in 1977 to provide information, education and advocacy to the physician assistant profession. Physician assistants are licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. They perform physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, give advice on preventative health care, assist in surgery and write prescriptions. It is estimated that more than 70,000 PA professionals are in clinical practice in the U.S.

Diemer joined SIU in 2011. He earned his doctorate degree in health sciences from A.T. Still University in Mesa, Ariz. (2011), master’s and bachelor’s in physician assistant studies from University of Nebraska College of Medicine in Omaha (1998,1996); and bachelor’s in education from SIU-Carbondale (1990).

He and his wife, Cheri, are parents of four children, Madison, Joeli, Daimon and Finley.
