SIU Med School Sponsors Hispanic-Latino Ethnic Heritage Day

An Ethnic Heritage Day celebration featuring Hispanic and Latino cultures will be held Tuesday, September 18 at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The event will be held from noon to 1 p.m. in the Pearson Museum of the School’s main building at 801 N. Rutledge St., Springfield.

The program includes a presentation, “The Latino Influence in Our Community,” by Omar Vargas, M.D., assistant professor of internal medicine, which highlights the mutual contributions between Hispanics/Latinos and our local community. Cultural exhibits and artifacts will be displayed. Foods from Hispanic and Latino cultures also will be offered.

Ethnic Heritage Day celebrations are held regularly at the medical school to share information about various ethnic cultures. The events are organized by SIU’s Diversity, Multicultural and Minority Affairs office.
