SIU Med School Fertility & IVF Center Embryology Laboratory Receives Accreditation

The Fertility & IVF Center Embryology Laboratory at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine has received accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP).

“The accreditation from CAP is a great honor, recognizing the excellent work our team has accomplished over the past few years,” said Dr. Ricardo Loret de Mola, medical director of the Fertility & IVF Center as well as chair of obstetrics and gynecology at SIU.

Mary McAsey, Ph.D., associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology, is the Fertility & IVF Center Embryology Laboratory director.

The accreditation was based on results of a recent on-site inspection as part of the CAP’s Accreditation Programs. During the CAP accreditation process, designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, safety program and record, and overall management.

The U.S. federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960’s, as being equal-to or more-stringent-than the government’s own inspection program.

The SIU Fertility & IVF Center provides a comprehensive approach to finding solutions for infertile couples. The team is led by board-certified faculty physicians with extensive experience in assisted reproductive technologies as well as three senior laboratory staff members.
