SIU Med School Names Chairman of Neurology
James M. Gilchrist, M.D., has joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine as professor and chair of the Department of Neurology.
Gilchrist has been professor and interim chair of neurology at Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, R.I. (2009-12). He was professor (1998-2012) and associate chair of clinical neurosciences at Brown (2003-09), where he had served as director of the Division of EMG and Neuromuscular Disease, director of the MDA clinic and program director of the clinical neurophysiology fellowship within the Department of Neurology (1990-2012) and as associate professor (1991-98).
He completed fellowships in electromyography at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. (1985), and in clinical neurophysiology at Medical College of Virginia in Richmond (1984), where he had completed his residency in neurology (1983). He received his medical degree from Loyola-Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago (1979) and a bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of Illinois in Champaign (1976). He earned a master’s degree from Brown University in 1992.
Gilchrist is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (in both clinical neurophysiology and neuromuscular medicine), American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the National Board of Medical Examiners. His society memberships include the American Academy of Neurology, American Association of Neuromuscular Electrodiagnostic Medicine, American Medical Association and the American Neurological Association.
He has published more than 70 peer-reviewed articles in medical journals and written 29 books and book chapters centered on his research interests of neuromuscular disease and electrodiagnosis within neurology.
Gilchrist and his wife, Maria DelBeccaro, M.D., live in Springfield. They have four children.
