SIU Med School Announces Kurt Heisler Scholarship Award
Jonathan Balagna, a fourth-year student from Forsyth, has been awarded the 2012 Kurt Heisler, M.D., Scholarship at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine.
Balagna is a graduate of Maroa-Forsyth High School (2003) and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah (2009). He is the son of Terry and Mary Balagna of Forsyth.
The Kurt Heisler Medical Student Scholarship Fund was the first scholarship established at the School of Medicine. Since its inception in 1976, the endowment has annually awarded a total of $92,680 in scholarship funds to 86 medical students.
In creating the fund, Heisler said, “This gift is intended to reflect the concern of the medical profession for the health of future generations of Illinoisans. It is also an expression of my gratitude for the many personal satisfactions resulting from a career in medicine.” Heisler was a family medicine physician who practiced in southern Illinois until he retired in 1976.
Gifts support the growth of the School of Medicine through scholarships, education, patient care and research. Individuals interested in making a donation can contact the SIU Foundation office at 217-545-2955 weekdays or www.siumed.edu/foundation.
