SIU Med School Announces Hertweck and Landecker Scholarships
Stephanie LeMaster has received two monetary awards from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine – the Hertweck Scholarship and Landecker Memorial Award.
The Virginia J. Hertweck Memorial Endowment Scholarship is given annually to an SIU medical student who plans to enter the primary care field and is from Schuyler, Cass or Brown counties or other rural areas.
The Landecker Award is a monetary award from the Dr. Hildegard C. Landecker Memorial Endowment Fund at SIU School of Medicine. LeMaster is the 30th recipient of the award, which is given annually to a freshman female medical student with high academic standing.
LeMaster is the daughter of Steve and Nancy LeMaster of Littleton. She is a graduate of Rushville-Industry High School (2008) and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in biology (2012).
The Hertweck Scholarship was established in 2001 by Virginia’s husband, Wolfgang Hertweck, formerly of Rushville, in honor of her dedication to health care and lifelong learning. Family and friends continue to contribute to the fund. Virginia Hertweck was a clinical instructor in SIU’s Department of Family and Community Medicine for six years and also worked as a certified family nurse practitioner and physician assistant throughout central Illinois. She was administrator of the Cass County Health Department for 12 years.
The Landecker fund was established in 1982 by the late Manfred Landecker, Ph.D., who was on the political science faculty at SIU Carbondale, in memory of his mother, who was a pediatrician.
Gifts support the growth of the School of Medicine through scholarships, education, patient care and research. Individuals interested in making a donation can contact the SIU Foundation office at 217-545-2955 weekdays or www.siumed.edu/foundation.
