SIU Med School Announces Honor Society Members
Sixteen new members have been inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. All 16 were inducted at the spring banquet for SIU’s Eta chapter.
Newly elected members from the Class of 2013 are Dr. Jennifer Carroll Reed, daughter of Tom and Diane Carroll of Peoria; Dr. Amelia Frank, daughter of Dr. Stuart Frank and Dr. Amber Barnhart of Springfield; Dr. Rebekah (Petrone) Hovland, daughter of Rick and Sue Petrone of Rochester; Dr. Bryan McConomy, son of Stephen and Lois McConomy of Springfield; Dr. Loren Reed, son of Randy and Mary Reed of Little York; Dr. Emily Tignor, daughter of John and Sandy Tignor of Washington; Dr. Amanda Velazquez, daughter of Rudy and Nancy Velazquez of Oak Park; and Dr. Emma Volkman, daughter of Phillip and Barbara Volkman of Ashland.
Student members from the Class of 2014 are Terah Cheatham, daughter of Craig and Julie Cheatham of Polo; Taylor Reid, son of Bill and Karen Reid of Springfield; and Daniel Sadowski, son of John and Victoria Sadowski of LaSalle.
Resident physicians from SIU training programs selected were Dr. Jennifer Nelson, an otolaryngology resident from Jackson, Wyo.; Dr. Pavan Bhargava, a neurology resident from India; and Dr. Jennifer Steinman, a general surgery resident from Champaign and a 2008 graduate of SIU.
Dr. Michael Brenner, assistant professor of surgery at SIU, was elected an honorary faculty member. Dr. Doug Carlson, a pediatric hospitalist in St. Louis and a 1984 graduate of SIU, was elected an alumni member.
The only national honor medical society in the world, AOA recognizes and works to perpetuate excellence in the medical professions. Election to AOA is based on integrity, leadership, compassion, fairness and scholastic excellence.
