SIU Med School Sponsors India Ethnic Heritage Day

An Ethnic Heritage Day celebration featuring the culture of India will be held Wednesday, August 15, at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The event will be held noon to 1 p.m. in the Pearson Museum of the School’s main building at 801 N. Rutledge St., Springfield.

The program includes a presentation “India: From a Glorious Past to Her Current Tryst with Democracy and Modernism” by Proshanta Nandi, Ph.D., emeritus professor of sociology at the University of Illinois Springfield. Nandi is the author of the book “Quality of Life of Asian Americans” as well as many journal articles. He has served as a visiting professor in several countries and received numerous grants and awards including a Fulbright Scholarship and Smithsonian Award.

There also will be cultural displays and artifacts as well as tasting of Indian foods.

Ethnic Heritage Day celebrations are held regularly to share information about various ethnic cultures.  The events are organized by the SIU Diversity, Multicultural and Minority Affairs office.
