Simmons Cancer Institute at SIU Marks 5th Annual Butterfly Release June 22

The 5th Annual Butterfly Release benefiting Simmons Cancer Institute at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine (SCI) will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 22 in the Thomas Garden of Hope, Simmons Cancer Institute, 315 W. Carpenter Street, Springfield.

The event is free and open to the public. Butterfly sponsorships are available for $25 by calling 217-545-2955 or online at www.siumed.edu/cancer. To receive additional information regarding other sponsorship opportunities call Patsy Wappel at 217-545-0395.

SCI’s Butterfly Release celebrates, supports and encourages anyone facing a health-related issue, family members, friends, and professional caregivers who provide understanding and assistance.

Names of persons who are being celebrated and those being remembered are read publicly during the ceremony. Music and inspirational readings are also featured, followed by the release of butterflies native to central Illinois; the highpoint of the special program.

“This event is a tribute to anyone experiencing health challenges and also celebrates those who have walked this path with them,” said Evelyn Thomas, the honorary chair of the Butterfly Release.

Thomas donated funds for the garden in memory of her late husband Gordon, who died in 2003 of lung cancer.
