SIU Med School Announces Templeton Scholarship

Maddelynn Hawkins, a first-year medical student, has received a monetary award from the J.S. Templeton, M.D., Memorial Scholarship at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The award is given annually to an SIU medical student from Perry County.

Hawkins is the daughter of Wayne Hawkins of Pinckneyville and Casey Hawkins of Cutler.  She is a graduate of Pinckneyville High School (2008) and St. Louis University, where she earned her degree in biology (2012).

The Templeton Scholarship was established in 1993 by Harriss Malan of Carbondale and Jane Templeton Minton of DuQuoin, in memory of their uncle and father, Dr. James Scott Templeton.  Templeton was a general practitioner who practiced in the Pickneyville area for more than sixty years. He also was a founder of Pinckneyville Community Hospital.
