SIU Med Student Receives Hertweck Scholarship

Daniel Summers, a first-year medical student, has received a monetary award from the Virginia J. Hertweck Memorial Endowment Scholarship at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The award is given annually to an SIU medical student planning to enter the primary care field and who is from Schuyler, Cass or Brown counties or other rural areas.

Summers, the son of William and Linda Summers of Nashville, is a graduate of Nashville Community High School (2001) and University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in molecular and cellular biology (2005).

The Hertweck Scholarship was established in 2001 by Virginia’s husband, Wolfgang Hertweck, formerly of Rushville, in honor of her dedication to health care and lifelong learning. Family and friends continue to contribute to the fund.

Virginia Hertweck was a clinical instructor in SIU’s Department of Family and Community Medicine for six years and also worked as a certified family nurse practitioner and physician assistant throughout central Illinois. She was administrator of the Cass County Health Department for 12 years.
