SIU Med Students Receive Scholarships

Two fourth-year medical students from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine have received scholarships from the Southern Illinois Medical Association (SIMA).

Amanda Becker is the daughter of Keith and Amy Becker of Belleville. She is a graduate of Althoff High School in Belleville (2006) and Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisc., where she earned her bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences (2010).

Michelle Hagene is the daughter of Leo and Diann Hagene of Percy. She is a graduate of Trico High School in Campbell Hill (2006) and SIU Carbondale, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry (2010).

The SIMA scholarships are awarded annually to two senior medical students from the southern Illinois area who plan to practice in primary care medicine. SIMA is the oldest medical society in Illinois. It recently held its 139th annual conference.
