SIU Med School Faculty Member Named Editor of International Journal
A new editor-in-chief for the international journal Teaching and Learning in Medicine (TLM) has been named. Anna T. Cianciolo, Ph.D., assistant professor of medical education at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, will succeed Jerry A. Colliver, Ph.D., professor emeritus of medical education, in the position.
TLM, founded at SIU and now in its 25th year, is published by Taylor and Francis Publishers and has subscribers in 33 countries. The journal serves as an international forum for scholarly, state-of-the-art research on the purposes and processes of teaching and learning as they relate to the education of medical professionals. It was recently recognized as one of the top six most impactful medical education journals, according to an article in the journal “Advances in Health Sciences Education.” TLM will publish a special supplemental issue in December to commemorate its 25th anniversary.
Prior to joining SIU in June 2011, Cianciolo founded and led Command Performance Research, Inc. in Champaign, where she procured more than $2.5M in US Army funding to research and develop officer training and leader education. She served in a postdoctoral research position at Yale University in New Haven, Conn. (2001-03). Cianciolo earned her doctorate in engineering psychology from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta (2001) and her master’s degree in cognitive and biological psychology from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (1997). She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (1995).
Cianciolo is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and serves on the editorial board of the “Journal of Experimental Psychology, Applied.” She has published articles in numerous books and journals as well as conference proceedings.
Colliver, who joined the SIU faculty in 1981, has retired after more than 30 years of service but will continue to serve on a volunteer basis as a consulting editor. He is a nationally recognized expert in performance-based assessment, used at most U.S. medical schools. Colliver was honored in 1995 with the John P. Hubbard Award awarded by the National Board of Medical Examiners to an individual who made significant contributions in the field of evaluation in medicine.
