SIU Med School Announces Tippy Scholarship
Drew Schmucker, a fourth-year medical student, has received a monetary award from the Penelope K. Tippy, M.D., Scholarship at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The award is given to a fourth-year student from southern Illinois who plans to practice in family medicine.
Schmucker, the son of Charles and Julie Schmucker of Olney, is a graduate of East Richland High School in Olney (2005) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry (2009).
The Penelope K. Tippy, M.D., Scholarship was established in 2013 by Southern Illinois Healthcare. Tippy was a professor of family and community medicine, director of the SIU Family Practice Residency Program in Carbondale and medical director of the SIU Family Practice Centers in Carbondale, Sessor and West Frankfort. She joined SIU in 1982 and retired in 2012.
