SIU Med Student Jason West Earns Scholarship

Jason West, a fourth-year medical student at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, has received a monetary award from the Penelope K. Tippy, MD, Scholarship. The award is given to a fourth-year student from southern Illinois who plans to practice in family medicine.

The Penelope K. Tippy, MD, Scholarship was established in 2013 by Southern Illinois Healthcare. Tippy was a professor of family and community medicine, director of the SIU Family Practice Residency Program in Carbondale and medical director of the SIU Family Practice Centers in Carbondale, Sesser and West Frankfort. She joined SIU in 1982 and retired in 2012.

West, son of Dean and Trudy West of Harrisburg, is a graduate of Harrisburg High School (2008). He attended the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in molecular and cell biology (2012).
