JUNE 2003
June 30 - Southern Illinois Trauma Center Continues Building Trauma Network -- The SITC completes its fourth year and moves hospital locations July 1.

June 18 - Lung Reduction Surgery Successful -- SIU physician is successfully performing lung reduction surgery as a treatment option for patients with severe emphysema.

June 18 - Media Advisory -- SIU is again the Circle of Hope sponsor for the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life in June in Springfield.

June 18 - Relief from Seasonal Allergies-- A School of Medicine physician says for many people summer brings sneezing, wheezing, watery eyes and runny noses - all allergic reactions.

June 11 - Camp COCO Golf Outing Set -- The ninth annual charity golf outing benefiting the Camp COCO Children's Cancer Fund at the School of Medicine in Springfield tees off at noon Wednesday, June 25.

June 6 - Three Receive Pharmacology Awards -- An SIU 2003 graduate, an SIU researcher and a high school student receive awards.

MAY 2003
May 30 - Two Receive State Honors -- Two faculty from the School receive professional honors.

May 30 - Two Receive Humanism in Medicine Award -- A faculty member and graduating senior receive the 2003 Humanism in Medicine Award.

May 21- Skin Cancer Screenings Set -- Free skin cancer screenings will be held June 5-6 in Springfield, sponsored by the SIU Cancer Institute.

May 20- Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Trial Underway -- Patients are being recruited as part of a national clinical trial to evaluate a new therapy to prevent bypass graft therapy.

May 20- Breast Cancer Prevention Trial Underway -- Patients are being recruited to participate in a breast cancer prevention trial to determine the role of diet and exercise.

May 20 - Stroke Expert Stresses Early Treatment -- An SIU stroke expert stresses early treatment to minimize potential damage from a stroke.

May 9 - Commencement 2003 is Held -- SIU Med School graduates 71 physicians and 3 doctoral students in Springfield.

May 8 - SCOPE 2003 is Published -- The tenth annual edition of SCOPE, the literary magazine of the School of Medicine, is published.

May 6 - SIU Med School Announces Research Symposium Awards -- Ten medical and graduate students and resident physicians received top awards in the 13th annual Combined Research Symposium at the School.

May 2 - Network for Child Abuse Cases Announced -- A partnership between the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (IDCFS) and the School of Medicine provides medical evaulations for child abuse cases in southern Illinois.

APRIL 2003
April 29 - Leukemia Support Group -- The Leukemia Society of Central Illinois, St. John's Hospital and the School of Medicine have formed a new Springfield support group for patients of blood-related cancers.

April 28 - Medical Student Receives National Fellowship -- Sophomore med student at the School, received an Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Student Research Fellowship for 2003.

April 28 - Sangamon County Art Exhibit -- Seventy-four pieces of artwork will be exhibited through Thursday, May 22, in the second floor lobby of the School of Medicine, 801 N. Rutledge St., Springfield.

April 23 - Membership in Friends of Pearson Museum -- The Pearson Museum at the School of Medicine is offering memberships in the Friends of the Pearson Museum.

April 23 - Diabetes Research -- A research scientist at the School of Medicine has been awarded a three-year grant from the American Diabetes Association for the study of immune system T cells to inhibit Type I diabetes.

April 17 -SIU Med Students Host 5K Run -- Proceeds from the 9th annual American Medical Association 5K Run will go to M.E.R.C.Y. Communities.

MARCH 2003
March 25 - Two Receive Honors -- Two faculty from the School receive honors from professional organizations.

March 20 - SIU Med School Offers Support Program for Children With Cancer -- The School has organized a Special Friends program in Springfield. 

March 20 - SIU Seniors and Residency Programs Get Match News -- A majority of students choose primary care postgraduate training.

March 19 - SIU Conducts Blood Clot Study -- Patients are needed for a national clinical trial for the treatment of blood clots of the lower legs.

March 4 - Enos School Displays Art -- Selected artwork by Enos students is displayed at Med School.

March 3 - Brain Awareness Week Activities Set -- A public forum on brain disease and aging highlight Brain Awareness Week, March 10-14.

FEBRUARY 2003
February 28 - Cover the Uninsured Week Set -- To help raise awareness of the plight of the uninsured, SIU and its affiliated hospitals have organized a series of events to be held during the week March 10-16.

February 28 - Primary Care Week Planned -- A series of week-long activities are planned by medical students.

February 21 - Director of SIU Cancer Institute Named -- An oncologist with nearly 30 years of clinical experience is named director of the Cancer Institute.

February 20 - SIU Med School Receives Grant to Study Hearing Loss -- A research scientist at the School has been awarded a five-year federal grant to study age-related hearing loss.

February 3 - Lung Cancer Support Group Formed -- A new lung cancer support group for patients and families will meet monthly at SIU Cancer Institute.

JANUARY 2003
January 31 - SIU Holds 7th session of "Mini Medical School" -- SIU Mini Med School is a six-week series of 12 lectures on various medical and health care topics held in Springfield.

January 24 - Camp COCO Donation -- The Midwest Charity Horse Show, the largest donor to Camp COCO, adds to the COCO Endowment Fund.

January 23 - Pediatric Critical Care Team Formed -- Physicians from three divisions at SIU are using an 800-number and 24-hour-a-day pager in order to provide easy access for community physicians with pediatric patients who need medical care urgently.

January 22 - SIU Conducts Osteoarthritis Study -- Young adult women are needed for a osteoarthritis prevention study.

January 22 - Cecil L. Martin Distinguished Lecture -- "The Role of Genetics in Medicine" is the title of the annual Cecil Martin Lecture.

January 21 - RHI Partnership Announced -- Washington County Hospital and the School announces a new partnership bringing a new health care service to Washington County.

January 15 - SIU Med School Conducts Artery Disease Study -- Adults are needed for the study of a new drug and its effect on treating severe peripheral artery disease.

January 15 - SIU Sponsors Third Annual Cancer Symposium -- "Awareness in Research, Prevention, Diagnosis and Treatment" is the topic for the annual cancer symposium in Springfield.

January 15 - SIU Residencies Receive Accreditation -- The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education reaccredits the School's residency programs for the maximum five years.

January 10 - New Pathology Chair Named -- A professor of pathology is named chair of pathology.

January 8 - Media Advisory -- About 30 children with cancer, patients in SIU's Department of Pediatrics, meet with their "special friends" to enjoy an ice skating party.

January 7- Losing To Win -- Five-month weight loss program, sponsored by Department of Internal Medicine, is offered this winter.

DECEMBER 2002
December 18 - Assistant Dean of Residency Affairs is Named - New assistant dean for SIU's graduate medical education program is named.

December 17 - Two Staff are Honored -- Two SIU staff receive honors from professional organizations.

December 6 - Psychiatry Chair is Named -- New chair for department of psychiatry is named.

December 6 - Two Honored for Humanism -- Two graduates of the School are among 53 national finalists for the 2002 Humanism in Medicine Award.

December 5 - Alzheimer Center Searches for Cure to Mysterious Disease -- A "brain bank" that is part of SIU's Center for Alzheimer Disease & Related Disorders is studying this debilitating disease.

NOVEMBER 2002
November 22 - Media Advisory -- "The Art and Science of Medicine - the Role of Experience in Clinical Reasoning" is the topic of the Howard S. Barrows Medical Education Colloquium.

November 20 - Med School Receives NIA Grant -- A research scientist has been awarded a five-year grant to study aging and its effect on Alzheimer's disease.

November 6 - SIU Med School Offers Diabetes Program -- A health seminar entitled "Caring for Your Diabetes" is offered by SIU's endocrinology division.

November 6 - SIU Holds Alzheimer Awareness Forum -- Alzheimer disease is the topic for a public forum offered by the School and the Springfield chapter of Alzheimer's Association.

OCTOBER 2002
October 29 - Faculty Member Honored -- SIU's LAM director receives national award and an NIH grant to research sleep deprivation.

October 21 - Media Advisory -- "Deformities of the Lower Extremities in Children" is the topic for the 16th annual Mimi Covert Memorial Lectureship.

October 15 - Foot Screenings Offered in November -- Diabetics and people with foot problems are invited to free screenings in November sponsored by the SIU Department of Surgery.

October 14 - Landecker Memorial Award Announced -- A medical student from Gurnee is the 20th recipient of the Dr. Hildegard C. Landecker Award.

October 2 - Denim & Diamonds Fundraiser Set -- The Breast Center at SIU hosts its 4th annual Denim & Diamonds fundraiser.

SEPTEMBER 2002
September 26 - SIU Receives Two State Grants for Technology Centers -- Two grants are being used to enhance faculty research and economic development efforts.

September 26 - Dementia Conference Scheduled -- "Caring for People with Dementia" is the topic for the 4th annual dementia conference, co-sponsored by the School's Alzheimer Center.

September 9 - Joint Prostate Screenings Set -- Prostate cancer screenings are offered three days in September through a cooperative effort by nine health organizations.

September 5 - Doctors Fair has Spots Open -- Students, residents and faculty will meet representatives from health organizations at the 2002 Doctors Fair.

AUGUST 2002
August 22 - Annual Emmet Pearson Lecture Set -- “P.T. Barnum Was Right:  Medical Devices and Public Gullibility” is the title of the seventh annual Emmet F. Pearson Memorial Medical History Lecture.

August 21 - Pediatric Oncology Conference to be Held -- "Cancer in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults" is the topic for a medical education conference in Springfield.

August 21 - SIU Awarded National Science Foundation Grant -- A School researcher receives a two-year NSF grant to study how medical students learn in a surgical setting.

August 13 - Media Advisory -- Medical students in the class of 2006 start their medical training in Carbondale and receive symbolic White Coat.

August 5 - New Dean is Announced at SIU School of Medicine -- J. Kevin Dorsey, M.D., Ph.D., is named the new dean and provost at the School.

August 2 - Administrative Promotion is Announced -- New associate dean for information resources is named.

August 2 - Losing to Win Program Offered -- A 15-week program is being offered in Springfield by SIU Department of Internal Medicine.

JULY 2002
July 19 - Take Our Children to Work Program Set -- A one-day program for children of employees will be held at the medical school.

July 10 - Area Physician is "Mentor of the Year" -- A Carbondale physician is named Mentor of the Year for the 2001-2002 academic year in Carbondale.

July 10 - Faculty Promotions Awarded -- Academic promotions are awarded to 11 faculty members at the medical school in Springfield and Carbondale.

July 10 - SIU Organizes Camp COCO 2002 -- The 17th annual Camp COCO, sponsored by SIU's Department of Pediatrics, hosts 70 campers with cancer and other blood disorders during its one-week session in July.

July 1 - SITC Names New Director -- The Southern Illinois Trauma Center (SITC) names a new medical director and provides latest figures.
