SIU Med School Offers Diabetes Education Program

People with diabetes and their families are invited to a free educational event sponsored by the Division of Endocrinology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. The event "I Have Diabetes Every Day" will be held 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 19, at Memorial Medical Center's Wedeberg Conference Center, 701 N. First Street, Springfield.

A part of American Diabetes month, the program will offer helpful tips and suggestions for living with diabetes. Physicians, nurses and dietitians from the School's endocrinology division will discuss how to manage diet, exercise and blood sugar control for people both at home and away from home.

Information exhibits open at 5:30 p.m. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. with "Well-Controlled Diabetes: What Do the Numbers Mean?" The remaining half-hour sessions are "I Know I Need to Exercise. How Much is Enough?", "Carbohydrates?: Help!" and "Handling Diabetes Away from Home." The audience will have opportunities to ask questions after each presentation. Light refreshments will be served.
